Leonardo De Vinci Leonardo DaVinci (lay oh NAHR doe dash VEEN cheep) was born in a small village called Vinci in the country of Italy. He was raised by his grandparents and even as a boy showed signs of genius. He could work hard mathematics problems and was a very good artist.
Albrecht Durer Paul Gauguin (gosh GAN) was born in Paris, France. His father died while the family was moving to Peru. Paul with his mother and older sister Mari continued on to Peru and stayed with rich relatives there for six years. When he was seventeen years old he became a sailor and traveled around the world. He spent some time in the Navy, then became a stockbroker's clerk in Paris. He became quite successful at the stock exchange and also began painting during his free time.

Diego Rivera Our featured painting by Diego Rivera is The Flower Carrier. Notice the bold, bright colors he uses. With the use of shadows he makes the subject stand out from the background of the painting almost as if the figures are outlined. How does he repeat the colors? Compare the size of the man to the size of the woman. The man is carrying the heavy load, but he appears to be a smaller person than the woman putting the load on his back. .

Her parents encouraged her interest and gave her lessons. She was one of seven children in the family, and the education of their children was important to her parents. Her mother had been educated in the East. The family moved to Virginia, and Georgia took private art lessons for several years. When she was eighteen years old she went to live with her aunt and attended the Art Institute of Chicago. Next she returned to her family in Virginia.

We are really not sure when he was born. The Vecelli family was noble, but not wealthy. His father's name was Gregorio, his mother was Lucia, his brother was Francesco and his sister's name was Orsa. He studied with the famous painters Giovanni Bellini (je o VAHN nehbel Lee nee) and his brother Gentile Bellini(jen TEE lay bel LEE nee) and also with Giorgione (johr JYOHN ay).
THE SMOKE SIGNAL Frederic Remington (FRED rik RIM ing ton) was born in 1861 in Canton, New York. His father who was a colonel in the cavalry, was a commander in the Civil War. He told his son stories about that era. He sent Frederic to a military academy, but the boy was not satisfied there. They sent him to study art at Yale, but his main interest there was playing football. He returned home when his father died.
