Non Fiction. What’s the Difference????. Books that are nonfiction are about real things, people, events, issues etc…. Books that are made up by the author, or are not true are fiction . NON-FICTION. FICTION. Still Confused???. Think of it this way: You can only say NO once:

  2. What’s the Difference???? • Books that are nonfiction are about real things, people, events, issues etc… • Books that are made up by the author, or are not true are fiction. NON-FICTION FICTION

  3. Still Confused??? • Think of it this way: You can only say NO once: Fiction- NOT True NON- Fiction- True

Common forms of non fiction • Letters and Journals • – Contain personal thoughts and reflections • Biographies (next week) • – The life story of someone written by another • person • Autobiographies (next week) • – The writer’s account of his/her own life • Memoirs • – The writer’s record of experiences from of his/her • own life

  7. Common forms of non fiction • Media Accounts • – Works written for newspapers, magazines, • television, or radio • Essays • – Medium in length • – Discussion of a topic • – Can tell a lot about the author • – Express author’s personal feelings

  8. Common forms of non fiction • Articles • – Small in length • – Focus on the facts of a subject • – Express an author’s bias • • their strong opinions on a topic • Magazines • Textbooks • Encyclopedia • Newspaper

Purposes of non fiction • To EXPLAIN • – Tells you how to do something • – Describes someone/something • To ENTERTAIN • – Provides an escape • – Something to do for fun during free time • To INFORM • – Gives you information • To PERSUADE • – Attempts to change your view/opinion • about something

How to Find the Book on the Shelf using the DDs 918.12 ABC • Look at the first digit (9) and put 2 zeros after it: 900 • Find the shelf topper for 900 • Find the first three digits before the decimal: 918 • Then find the last 2 digits after the decimal: 918.12 • Finally, find the letters: 918.12 ABC

Dewey Decimal System • A system that organizes nonfiction books • 10 categories Here are some examples of topics or books that can be found in each category. • 000- UFO’s and aliens • 100- Ghost and the Supernatural • 200- Religion, festivals, mythology • 300- Social issues, holidays, fairytales • 400- Grammar and Foreign Language • 500- Space, dinosaurs, and insects • 600- Inventions, cars, and diseases • 700- Sports, how to draw books, and entertainment • 800- Poetry, Plays, and joke books • 900- States, wars, and Sept. 11th Which category is your favorite?
