OSFC UCAS choices 7/2/13 Total of 3388 choices 60% Conditional Offers 23% No Decision Yet 13% Unsuccessful 3% Invites still to take place or no decision yet 1% Withdrew from that choice
Vocational Courses eg NHS related, teaching, social work etc • Often take longer to decide than ‘subject’ courses • Students rarely get offers from all 5 – often 1 or 2. • Universities may offer a related alternative non-vocational course instead of just ‘ unsuccessful’.
What happens next with UCAS?1. Universities make a decision http://www.ucas.tv/ucas/playlist/76FhN/
2.You make a decision • Visit the university http://www.ucas.tv/ucas/video/xcFyP Try the journey in rush hour on public transport if you plan to commute and live at home • Check out the financial situation for that university and course (extra bursaries etc?) • Consider their offer and grades again ONCE YOU HAVE RECEIVED YOUR NEXT RESULTS IN MARCH • Reply by 9th May, 6th June or 27th June depending on the deadline UCAS gives you
3. If you don’t have/accept offers? • UCAS Extra – if holding no offers, apply to 1 other course at a time from 25th February http://www.ucas.tv/ucas/video/w6x7w • Clearing and adjustment – getting a place once you have your results from 15th August (also guides on ucastv if needed) • Do you need to reconsider your plan? Gap years? More experience? Different direction? Everybody’s situation is different, if you are in this situation, seek advice from the staff in careers to talk through your options.
Voluntary work/ Gap year? • Volunteers Fair Wed 13th Feb 1 – 4pm room 25 • www.do-it.org • Vacancies in careers blog
Student Finance For new students • 31 May 2013 is the deadline for applying for your student finance. • If you are planning to start a full-time course at university or college this autumn it’s time to start thinking about your student finance. • Youdo not need to have a confirmed university place to apply for student finance; you can enter your first choice of course, which can be updated easily at a later date. • Applications should be completed online as soon as possible at www.gov.uk/studentfinance
Accommodation? • The university will usually contact you directly once you have accepted a firm choice and have put ‘ living away’ on your UCAS form. • Look at what is available on the website at any time • Don’t be surprised if they ask for a deposit that may not be refundable
Bursaries/ Scholarships • Some send you an application form automatically, others expect you to find out and apply for yourself – check their website for details or http://www.scholarship-search.org.uk/ • READ THE CRITERIA YOU MUST MEET CAREFULLY! But if in doubt apply for it! • See you Personal Tutor or Joanne Boyes in Careers if you need college to complete part of your form.
