  3. Pictures can help you solve tricky problems. Mac had 3 apples. He dropped one apple and got two more apples from the fridge. How many apples does he have now?

  5. There are 5 pencils on Jack’s desk. Jill has 4 more pencils than Jack on her desk. Penny has three more pencils than Jill on her desk. How many pencils are there in all?

  6. Jack’s pencils: (5) Jill’s pencils: (5 + 4) Penny’s pencils: (5 + 4) + 3 5 + (5 + 4) + (5 + 4 + 3) = 26 pencils
