Faculty Highlights Dieter Hennings Assistant Professor of Guitar University of Kentucky School of Music Dieter Hennings Yeomans's musical endevaours span from new music on guitar to early music for lute, baroque guitar, and theorbo. Mr. Hennings has been a soloist with Canada’s New Music Concerts Ensemble, Tito Sccipa Orchestra of Lecce, Italy, Eastman BroadBand Ensemble, Eastman School Symphony Orchestra, the University of Arizona Philharmonia, the Orquesta Filarmonica de Monterrey among many others. Mr. Hennings has won several prestigious competitions including the 2008 Aaron Brock International Guitar Competition, 2005 Eastman Guitar Concerto Competition, the 2002 Villa de Petrer, Alicante (Spain) International Competition, the 2001 Portland Guitar Competition, among others. Mr. Hennings is an active proponent of new music, particularly that of Latin America, having recently worked with composers Mario Davidovsky, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Juan Trigos and Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon. Mr. Hennings has recently premiered works by composers Jake Bancks, Wes Matthews, John Aylward, Beth Wiemann, Hebert Vazquez, Luca Cori, Juan Trigos and Scott Worthington. He recently performed Synchronisms no. 10 for guitar and tape for Mario Davidovsky in a concert dedicated to the composer's work. Mr. Hennings has received grants from the Howard Hanson Institute for American Music and the Fondo Estatal para la Cultura y las Artes to commission and premiere contemporary works for guitar. Recent engagements include concerts with pop-singer Natalie Merchant and baroque vioinist Monica Huggett as well as appearances at the Mexican Embassy in Rome, Festival SpazioMusica of Cagliari, Conservatorio de las Rosas in Morelia, Mexico, University of Chicago, Festival Internacional de Chihuahua, New York’s Joyce Theater, Julliard’s Paul Hall, and New England Conservatory. Mr. Hennings is a resident artist at the East Coast Composers Ensemble and the Eastman Broad Band Ensemble, with whom he maintains an active performing schedule. In 2005 and 2007 he participated in the modern premieres of the baroque operas "Apollo and Daphne" and “La virtù de’stralli d’Amore” by Francesco Cavalli, both directed by Paul O'Dette. Mr. Hennings recently performed recitals on baroque lute and guitar at Milan’s Spazio Tadini, the Arizona Early Music Society and the Rochester Early Music Society among many others. Current recording projects include an album of works by Silvius Leopold Weiss for baroque lute and the guitar works of composers Juan Trigos and Luca Cori. Recently he collaborated in a recording project with singer Natalie Merchant which also featured musicians like Winton Marsalis, Medeski, Martin and Wood, and producer Anders Levin. Since August of 2009, Dieter Hennings is Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Kentucky where he directs the Classical Guitar Studies program.

18. Faculty Highlights Cristina Alcade Ph.D., Indiana University Cristina Alcalde is an Associate Professor of Gender and Women's Studies and Faculty Co-Director of A&S Wired Residential College. Her areas of specialization include Latin America (with an emphasis on Peru and the Andean region); Latinos/as in the U.S; gender and race; intersections of state, institutional, and interpersonal violence; domestic violence; migration; and Latino masculinities. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology and an M.A. in Latin American Studies from Indiana University. Her publications include her book, The Woman in the Violence: Gender, Poverty, and Resistance in Peru (2010) and a co-edited book (with J. Zavala), Visiones del Perú de académicos peruanos en Estados Unidos (Visions of Peru of Peruvian Academics in the United States) (2008). She has also published articles in the journals Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism; the Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology; Latin American Perspectives; Journal of Consumer Culture; Latino Studies; JARM: Journal of the Association for Research on Mothering; and Journal of Gender Studies. Her work has also appeared in book chapters in collections including Local Violence, Global Media: Feminist Analyses of Gendered Representations and Anthropology at the Front Lines of Gender-Based Violence. Her current research areas include Latino masculinities, pregnancy and women’s experiences of bed rest, and Latino/a migration to Kentucky.

19. Faculty Highlights Marta Mendiondo, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Dr. Mendiondo holds a Master in Computer Science from Boston University and a PhD in Statistics from the University of Kentucky. She is currently responsible for data management and biostatistical analysis in PREADISE, a multicenter Alzheimer's Disease prevention trial. Data management in PREADVISE is handled using FAX TELEform. She has also been responsible for data management and statistical analysis in the Biostatistics and Data Management Core of the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at the University of Kentucky.

20. Faculty Highlights Noemi Lugo, soprano, is a native of Caracas, Venezuela. She received a Vocal Performance Diploma from the José Angel Lamas National Conservatory of Music. While in Venezuela, she performed with major orchestras and choral organizations, soloing extensively throughout the country and Europe with Schola Cantorum de Caracas under the direction of Alberto Grau. She performed with the Opera Metropolitana de Caracas and Opera Teresa Carreflo, Madison Civic Opera, University of Wisconsin Opera, and University of Colorado Opera. Dr. Lugo’s operatic roles include Oscar in Ballo in Maschera, Despina in Cosi fan tutte, Norma in Don Pasquale, Adina in L’Elisir d’amore, Susanna in La Nozze di Figaro, Belinda in Dido and Aeneas, and Amelia in Amelia al Ballo. She remains active, presenting many recitals and lecture recitals of Art Songs from Spain and Latin America. In January 2003, Dr. Lugo traveled to South East Asia to offer concerts in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong. These concerts benefited institutions such as the Kidney Foundation, Children with Aids, and others. The summer of 2003 took her to Bolivia where she participated as a performer and scholar in the first “Songs Across The Americas Festival,” organized by Songs Unlimited, Inc. Dr. Lugo has taught for the Kentucky Institute for International Studies, Middlebury College, and Operafestival di Roma. She has presented recitals, master classes, and lecture recitals in Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Ohio, Texas, Utah, Puerto Rico, and Germany. She was a presenter in the National Conference of the National Association of Teachers of Singers in San Diego and in the International Conference of the College Music Society in Alcalá de Henares in Madrid, Spain. She served as chair of the Vocal Area at the University of Kentucky’s School of Music from 1997 to 1999 and as Director of Latin American Studies Program from 2002 to 2004. She teaches a course for the Freshman Discovery Seminar on “Musical Understanding through Music.” In 2007, Dr. Lugo was a guest teacher for the Operafestival di Roma in Italy, and will offered a solo recital in Middlebury College, Vermont. Also, Dr. Lugo was one of only two tenured faculty at UK named a winner of the 2008 Provost's Outstanding Teaching Award. In the Spring of 2010, Dr. Lugo was a Fulbright Scholar at Universidade Federal de Goiania in Brazil.
