What is God • God is a Spirit, (John 4:24) infinite, (Job 11:7–9) eternal, (Ps. 90:2) and unchangeable, (James 1:17) in his being, (Exod. 3:14)wisdom, (Ps. 147:5) power, (Rev. 4:8) holiness, (Rev. 15:4) justice, goodness, and truth. (Exod. 34:6–7)
To what End? What is my ultimate aim and object in occupying my mind with these things? What do I intend to do with my knowledge about God, once I have it? – Packer pg. 21
Need for Meditation • Meditation is the activity of calling to mind, and thinking over, and dwelling on, and applying to oneself, the various things that one knows about the works, and ways and purposes and promises of God. – Packer pg.23
The People Who Know Their God “One can know a great deal about God without much knowledge of Him.” “One can know a great deal about Godliness without much knowledge of Him”
Biblical Evidences of Knowing God • Those who know God have great energy for God. • Those who know God have great thoughts of God. • Those who know God show great boldness for God. • Those who know God have great contentment in God.
Knowing and Being Known What were we made for? To Know God.
Knowing God • Listening to God’s Word and receiving it as the Holy Spirit interprets it, in application to oneself. • Noting God’s nature and character, as His Word and works reveal it. • Accepting his invitations and doing what he commands. • Recognizing and rejoicing in the love that he has shown in thus approaching you and drawing you into this divine fellowship.
Knowing Christ • “no one comes to the father except through me”. John 14:6 • Christ has been revealed to us by the spirit through the Word.
Summary • Knowing God is a matter of personal dealing. • Knowing God is a matter of personal involvement. (mind, will and feeling) • Knowing God is a matter Grace.
