New Deal • FDR policy to end the depression • Program of 3 R’s (Relief, Recovery, Reform) • Wanted to give people money, provide programs to get people jobs, and pass laws to fix the problems in bank and stock market
FDR Info • Had polio, in wheelchair as president • Married to Eleanor Roosevelt (distant cousin) who used position to do lots of good works
Bank holidays • FDR closed remaining banks before they went out of business • Were not allowed to open again until could prove they had money
Hundred days • FDR passed record number of legislation in first 100 days of office then any other president • Gave people positive hope and trust in gov’t
Fireside chats • FDR talked with American people over the radio frequently to give updates on what is going on in gov’t • Wanted to get public more involved
Regulation • SEC- Security Exchange Commission regulates stock market by making sure stocks are accurate to prevent fraud • Glass Steagall Act- investigate commercial and investment banking, prevented banks from investing in stock market • FDIC- Federal Deposit Insurance Corp will back banks so will never run out of money
