What is IS? • The art of applying information technology to enhance productivity, efficiency and effectiveness of business processes • More than ever companies need the skills offered by information systems majors to help them design, implement and manage the systems that support their operations, management and decision making functions • Every area of business depends on technology • Information systems can also be used to help increase revenue and provide a competitive edge • The objective of these systems is to enhance productivity by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of business processes • Computers and other information technologies are the technical foundations or the tools of information systems

General Preparation for IS • Both technical skills and knowledge of business process and practice are needed by an information systems professional to effectively work in today’s business environment • The field of information systems is unique in that it blends organizational and managerial concerns with the study of information technologies • These skills are necessary to advance into leadership positions, particularly within the information systems functional area of the firm

IS Career Overview • Career opportunities for information systems abound • By many accounts, the information technology industry (broadly defined) is the largest and fastest-growing industry in the world, and opportunities within it for high salaries, advancement, and career mobility are greater than in almost any other industry • Computer-based information systems already play a significant role in the operations and management of many enterprises • Numerous opportunities for employment exist within information systems departments and systems support groups in all kinds of organizations (government, industry, and business) for programmers, systems analysts, application development consultants, liaisons with users, database administrators, and information systems managers • The hiring policies for most of these positions in many firms often favor business information systems graduates because they understand not only the technology but also business functions and practice

  8. IS Career Paths • The career paths in information systems are as varied as the industries and organizations that hire IS graduates but there are several major categories for entry level positions

Career Paths for IS Specializations • Technical • Creating or assisting in the creation of technology products (software).  These jobs include programming, database engineering, operations (computer hardware) etc... • Analysis • Interpreting the technology.  This is mainly what the business users would like the technology to do.  These jobs include systems analyst and business analyst.

Types of IS Jobs • Consulting • Applying the analytical and problem solving features of IS with the knowledge of systems and programming; functions as part of a team of consultants • Database and Information Systems Management • Functioning within a company, agency, or organization to manage the various databases and systems where information is collected, stored, processed, retrieved and used; working with the people who access the information --information technology • Systems Analysis, Design, and Management • Helping to design the systems that manage the information • Business Systems Networking/Telecommunications

Recruitment and Training of IS • Companies are using a variety of strategies to recruit and train IS candidates ranging from internships to rotational training • Internships are an excellent way for employers to connect with students and introduce students to their organization. Many internships will lead to full time offers upon graduation • Companies also begin very early in Autumn Quarter to recruit June graduates. Students will often have offers by Winter Quarter • Finally, companies have training programs designed to help IS students continue to develop their skills in areas needed by the company. Some training programs help build technical skills; other programs will help the new employee understand the company in order to effectively manage the information systems
