  1. Paul's third journey

  2. An industrial town: Clay, metal, and wool. Look for references to manufacturing means and labor in the vision.

  3. Letter to Thyatira • NIV Revelation 2:18 "To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze.

  4. Letter to Thyatira • 19 I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first. • AN INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH LOVE

  5. Letter to Thyatira • 20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. 21 I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling.

  6. Letter to Thyatira • 22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. 23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

  7. Letter to Thyatira • 24 Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan's so-called deep secrets (I will not impose any other burden on you): 25 Only hold on to what you have until I come.

  8. Letter to Thyatira • 26 To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations-- 27 'He will rule them with an iron scepter; he will dash them to pieces like pottery'--just as I have received authority from my Father. 28 I will also give him the morning star. 29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  9. Letter to Thyatira • Thyatira was an industrial town known for luxurious garments and fabrics. Many thought the waters contained special magical powers for the dyes to retain their colorful brilliance for long periods of time. • The city would later be renamed Akhisar by Muslims – White Castle.

  10. Letter to Thyatira • The ancients extracted the natural dye from several species of plant as well as one of the two famous Phoenician sea snails.

  12. Inland Thyatira • Which is easier, to bring the sheep (for wool) to the ocean OR the snail dye to the sheep.

  13. Letter to Thyatira • The wealthy and generous Lydia came from Thyatira. While traveling and selling, this business lady came to the faith and was baptized in Phillipi. Lydia was a generous supporter of Paul and the early church. She might have brought Christianity back with her to Thyatira.

  14. Letter to Thyatira • Thyatira was an inland industrial city of great wealth. Inscriptions in the ruins mention the following: Wool-workers, linen-workers, makers of outer garments, dyers, leather-workers, tanners, potters, bakers, slave-dealers and bronze-smiths.

  15. Letter to Thyatira • Here a prominent woman (Jezebel) must have been prophesying that Christians could worship at the pagan altars without ill-effect to their faith. The sexual immorality associated with the pagan worship and lifestyle is clearly mentioned.

  16. Letter to Thyatira • As this “prophetess” claimed to know God’s will, she will not see God’s judgment coming upon her. She will undergo severe suffering, unless she repents. • Evidently, her teaching was not followed by many in the Thyatira church (2:24).

  17. Letter to Thyatira • We see the Lord is patient and forgiving, even for the worst of sins. In this instance, it is false teaching leading to sexual immorality. Clearly, the congregation is to rebuke her so that she can repent (v.20-22). Something similar was done in Corinth to a man sleeping with his step-mother. Public rebuke had its intended result to lead the man to his repentance (1 Cor. 5:1-13; 2 Cor. 2:5-11; Gal. 6:1-2).

  18. Letter to Thyatira • Jesus referred to himself as the Bright Morning star. He offers Himself to the congregation. The Morning star was the first to appear and the last to disappear in the sky (First and Last).

  19. Letter to Thyatira • Thyatira also made pottery. Like the discarded broken pots that abounded around them, Christ would discard the kingdoms of the earth that shatter at His coming (2:27).

  20. Letter to Thyatira • Thyatira sought business with many nations. For being faithful, the nations were theirs to serve with the Gospel. With their many open lines of trade, the Gospel could have easily spread through Christians associated with Thyatira.

  21. Application • We should avoid religious pluralism until the end. • Jesus is THE morning star and THE revelation of God, not A morning star or another revelation of God.
