1. Stratified Sampling Stratified sampling uses a small sample from a population to accurately represent each
element of that population. See the following example.
A company employs 1000 people. A stratified random sample of the employees is to be
selected to form a committee. Calculate the number of people from each department who
should be selected to form a committee of size 40.
The number employees in each department are as follows:
Management 55 Shopfloor 650 Engineering 170 Administration 125
The stratified sample will be calculated as follows:
Management: 55 ? 1000 ? 40 = 2.2 Therefore 2 people (round to nearest whole number)
Shopfloor: 650 ? 1000 ? 40 = 26 Therefore 26 people (no rounding required)
Engineering: 170 ? 1000 ? 40 = 6.8 Therefore 7 people
Admin: 125 ? 1000 ? 40 = 5 Therefore 5 people (Check: 2 + 26 + 7 + 5 = 40)
