Immigration & Discrimination • Before the 1880s there were few legal restrictions on immigration • Restrictions on immigration: • Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882: banned all new immigrants from China • Congress passed a law banning immigration of “undesirables,” meaning criminals or people diagnosed as being mentally incompetent • 1885 Congress passed a law banning contract labor (imported workers who sign a contract to work at a low wage) to protect American workers
Immigration & Discrimination • Immigration restrictions were supported by: • Unions • Nativist societies like the American Protective Association (the APA was Anti-Catholic) • Social Darwinists who believed the new immigrants were genetically inferior
Immigration & Discrimination • Anti-Immigrant Feelings: • Americans feared immigrants would not assimilate • Language/religion/customs too different • Many American workers resented the new immigrants---took jobs for low pay
Immigration & Discrimination • a large influx of immigrants and caused mounting discrimination. • Housing was limited • Competition for employment with the existing population was fierce and employment discrimination against the Irish became common.
Immigration & Discrimination • it became acceptable to discriminate against the Irish and newspapers depicted them as lazy, stupid and dirty. • Newspapers ads for employment would end with "No Irish need apply.“ • restaurants and hotels would display signs saying "No Irish permitted in this establishment."
Immigration & Discrimination • "In 1851-1852, railroad contractors in New York advertised for workers and promised good pay. • When mostly Irish applied, the pay was lowered to fifty-five cents a day. • When the workers protested, the militia was called in to force the men to accept."
Immigration & Discrimination • People on the West Coast worked to end immigration from China • Chinese immigrants worked on the RR-- Looked for other jobs after RR completed • Many people did not want to hire them-did not understand the Chinese culture
Immigration & Discrimination • Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 • Barred Chinese workers for 10 years • Renewed several times • Repealed in 1943

How to create a political cartoon • Include a Title • Remember political cartoons must show symbolism • Be creative and include humor • Do not make it too easy to understand, make your readers need to analyze it further • Include color
Get into your groups • Mrs. Johansen will assign each group a topic • Work efficiently until the end of class to complete your cartoons.
