Your Task • You are an expert in foreign and domestic policy • It is your job to advise the new queen Elizabeth, leader of England • You will be told about various problems and given a choice of three policies to follow. • Choose wisely. Your success will be rewarded. Failure will be punished as the queen may loose the throne and you will loose your head!

  3. YOUR AIMS • Your policy has very clear aims: • Get the new queen established on the throne. • Protect her from her enemies, both political and religious. • Make the economy of the country strong. • Maintain the Tudor royal family.

  4. Crisis: RELIGION • England has suffered under Mary’s Catholic rule • Many people were outraged by her burning of heretics • The Catholics want things to remain the same, and have powerful friends in the form of Spain • Some Protestants want to take things further than Elizabeth would like. • She wants a fair religion that will satisfy as many people as possible.

  5. Keep the country Catholic to avoid yet another religious change. Crisis: RELIGION Go back to the Protestant Church and let Catholics worship privately. Make the Protestants happy by burning Catholics at the stake. B C A

  13. Crisis: Elizabeth’s looks! • As Elizabeth gets older, the mirror show the lines in her face • Her hair is going grey • Her teeth are suffering and have started to rot • The strength of a country is judged by the beauty and good health of her queen. (Remember Castiglione’s ideal woman)

  14. Refuse to have any more portraits of Elizabeth painted. Crisis: Elizabeth’s looks! Accept that there is nothing one can do about it and encourage Elizabeth to act graciously. Have especially beautiful portraits painted of Elizabeth and send them to everyone. A B C

  34. Vagrants (able bodied beggars) moved from town to town • Faced harsh punishments from the Puritans who saw the unemployed as sinners • More lenient towards the “impotent poor” • Act of 1601- required each parish to take care of their own poor (aid for i.p., workhouses for vagrants)
