  1. Workplace of the Future How technology will shape your future

  2. Technology has made a huge impact on the workplace and society in general. It will become even greater as computers get: • Smaller • Faster • Smarter • So inexpensive that everyone can own one

  3. Flexible Scheduling • Companies will offer • Telecommuting-work from home online • Flex-time-employee may choose which hours to go to work • Workers may feel isolated……

  4. “Going to Work”??? • Employees telecommuting or working at nontraditional work sites such as satellite offices has grown by 20% or more per year. • 60 percent of the workforce today perform jobs for which physical location is no longer critical. • Within a few years "going to work" will become a meaningless phrase for most Americans. Work will be what they do, not the place they go to.

  5. End of the Weekend????? • Technology will allow workers to work whenever they wish. • Workers may choose to take their days off on Tuesday or Wednesday when malls and golf courses are less crowded. • Neither the workday or work week will have a definite beginning or end

  6. Self-Managed Teams • Rapid growth in the use of cross-functional teams • One-third of American companies with 50 or more employees have half or more of their employees working in self-managed or problem-solving teams • These teams have no traditional boss or supervisor • Team members are responsible for planning, scheduling, monitoring, and controlling their own work.

  7. Internet • Wireless Internet, laptop computers, cell phones, and pagers allow workers to conduct business: • All day • All night • Anywhere in the world

  8. Walking Resume???? • Some pets have a microchip containing the owner’s phone number embedded in their shoulder. • This same technology could be used to screen job candidates. • The chip would hold a person’s entire work history. • This would create a “Walking Resume” that would eliminate fraud and identify undesirable candidates.

  9. Job Destruction?? • Technology will ultimately result in destroying jobs for humans. • Robotics will eliminate thousands of blue-collar jobs in America’s factories. • Computers have reduced the need for white-collar managers since they allow one person to do the work of two or three.

  10. Artificial Intelligence??? • At present some law firms use software that can: • analyze facts • determine which rules apply • make recommendations • Create appropriate documents (wills, titles, etc.) • This could eventually eliminate the need for • Paralegals • Enty-level lawyers

  11. Gray Haired Workforce??? • Companies who cannot find skilled workers will be forced to hire older workers who have necessary skills. • Employers will have the challenge of encouraging young and older workers to work together harmoniously.

  12. Merry Christmas??? • Workplace Christmas events will disappear. • There are now more than 1,500 primary religious organizations functioning in the U.S.

  13. Need a College Degree?? • In the 21st Century only 20% of jobs will require a Bachelor’s Degree. • The greatest number of workers will need a Community College education.

  14. I’m done with school!!!! • Think again • All jobs will require constant retraining mainly due to advances in technology • Workers must view themselves as Lifelong Learners rather than seeing high school or college graduation as the end of education. • Employers will be looking for workers who have a willingness to learn new things.

  15. Dual Income Households have increased the need for service occupations such as: • Daycare • Restaurants • House Cleaning Services • Lawn Care • Security Services
