Chronic & Acute Effects of Exercise And Sprains/Strains/Tears
Acute • Short term • Result of single, traumatic event • Also called “macro trauma” • Examples: • Wrist fractures, ankle sprains, shoulder dislocations and hamstring strains
Chronic • Can result from macro trauma and reinjury • Can also result from over training • Errors in training (biomechanical inefficiencies) can also contribute
Treatment? • How would you deal with an acute injury? • What about managing a chronic injury?
Prevention • Listen to your body and other professionals • “No pain, no gain” is not a great mantra • Apply the 10 percent rule • Increase program or activity by only a max of 10% a week
Sprains • Result from over-stretching or tearing of the joint capsule or ligament • Ligaments are? • Joint capsule is? • Causes – falling, twisting, contact
Strains • Strains result from over-stretching of the muscle or tendon • A tear is generally much more severe than a strain • Tendons are? • Causes – excessive muscle contraction or overuse and even prolonged positions
Contusions • An injury to the tissue or bone where the skin is not broken • Blood vessels rupture and bleed into the tissue causing discolouration
