  1. Projectile Motion Chapter 3 section 3

  2. Objectives • Recognize examples of projectile motion. • Describe the path of a projectile as a parabola. • Resolve vectors into their components and apply the kinematic equations to solve problems involving projectile motion.

  3. What are projectiles? Objects that are thrown or launched into the air and are subject to gravity are called projectiles. Can someone give some example of projectiles?

  4. Projectile Motion? Projectile motion is the curved path that an object follows when thrown, launched, or otherwise projected near the surface of Earth. If air resistance is disregarded, projectiles follow parabolic trajectories.

  5. Example

  6. Projectile motion • Projectile motion is free fall with an initial horizontal velocity. • The yellow ball is given an initial horizontal velocity and the red ball is dropped. Both balls fall at the same rate. • In this book, the horizontal velocity of a projectile will be considered constant. • This would not be the case if we accounted for air resistance.

  7. Kinematic Equations for projectiles One method is to resolve vectors into components, then apply the simpler one-dimensional forms of the equations for each component. How can you know the displacement, velocity, and acceleration of a projectile at any point in time during its flight?

  8. Vertical and Horizontal projectile To solve projectile problems, apply the kinematic equations in the horizontal and vertical directions. In the vertical direction, the acceleration ay will equal –g (–9.81 m/s2) because the only vertical component of acceleration is free-fall acceleration. In the horizontal direction, the acceleration is zero, so the velocity is constant.

  9. Vertical and Horizontal projectiles • Projectiles Launched Horizontally • The initial vertical velocity is 0. • The initial horizontal velocity is the initial velocity.

  10. Vertical Motion of a projectile That falls from rest Vyf=ay*t Vyf^2=2ay*deltay Deltay=1/2ay(delta t)^2

  11. Horizontal Motion of a projectile Vx=vxi=constant Delta x=vx*delta t

  12. Example#1 The royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado rises 321 m above the Arkansas River. Suppose you kick a rock horizontally off the bridge. The magnitude of the rock’s horizontally off the bridge. The magnitude of the rock’s horizontal displacement is 45m.Find the speed at which the rock was kicked.

  13. Practice Let work on problems 1-4 from page 97.

  14. Use components to analyze objects launched at an angle A zookeeper finds an escaped monkey on a pole. While aiming her tranquilizer gun at the monkey, she kneels 10 m from the pole, which is 5m high. The tip of her gun is 1m above the ground. At the moment the zookeeper shoots, the monkey drops a banana. The dart travels at 50 m/s. Will the dart hit the monkey , the banana, or neither one?

  15. practice Lets work on problems 1-4 from the book page 99

  16. Closure Today we saw about projectile motion and how we can calculate the speed of a projectile. Next class we are going to learn about relative motion.
