  2. Session goals • Develop a deeper understanding of the rigor of the ELA standards • Write assessment questions that align to the rigor of the ela standards

Session agenda • Review standards and what they may look like in the implementation stage • Study the practice test to determine what type of questions and activities should be implemented in the class and on assessments • Write or Rewrite questions that are aligned to the Rigor of the ELA standards

  4. ELA Standards • Review the organizational structure of the standards for ELA • Which standards do most of ask questions naturally? • Which standards must we prepare questions in advance? • Where is Vocabulary Acquisition found? • Where can we find more about writing expectations? • Activity • As a table or with a partner, read the standard/standards you have been assigned • Underline the skill to be addressed • Circle the verb that indicates what the students are to be able to do with the skill • Be ready to explain the standard to the whole group and provide an example of an activity that might address the standard (Use chart Paper)

  5. Practice test and alignment document • Activity: • With a partner at your table, divide the standards up equally among the members of your table. (can use the alignment document) • Using the alignment document and the practice test, find all the questions that are aligned to your assigned standard • Cut and glue your questions to the piece of construction paper • Study the various ways the questions address the standard • Share your questions with the table – explain how these questions are aligned to the standard • Things to consider: • Are my questions similarly formatted? • Do my lessons guide my students to be able to answer this type of question? • Do my students know the skill at this level of rigor? • Can my students write a response to address the question?.

Writing a Rigorous Assessment • Vocabulary assessments: • Text dependent – avoid simply definition type • All choices should be plausible • Use variety of formats similar to practice test and other samples • Comprehension Assessments: • Text dependent that requires critical thinking / inference / analytical thinking • All choices should be plausible • Must address Story content, Author’s craft, Story structure, and comparative • Variety of multiple choice and written responses

Writing a Rigorous Assessment • Cold Reads / Fresh Reads: (Total point value = • Text dependent that requires critical thinking / inference / analytical thinking • All choices should be plausible • Must address Story content, Author’s craft, Story structure, and comparative • Variety of multiple choice and written responses • Incorporate Writing: • Short answers – 1 to 3 sentence responses • Constructed Responses – A well developed paragraph the requires students to analyze various elements of the story or compare multiple text or characters and settings with in a story.
