  3. Objectives • After today’s lesson, you will: • Examine the conditions faced by Civil War soldiers. • Discuss different approaches toward studies of these conditions

  4. Billy Yank and Johnny Reb • Ultimately more than 3.1 million soldiers served • 2.1 million from the North (one-half of all eligible) • 1 million from the South (4/5th of all eligible) • Total U.S. population in 1860: 31 million • More than 1 million casualties • North suffered 360,000 dead, 275,00 wounded • South suffered 260,000 dead, 137,000 wounded
