Notes- Lesson 1 • Columbus wanted to find a better way to reach the Indies. • The idea was to sail west across the Atlantic ocean. • Columbus needed money to pay for this expedition. • An expedition is a journey made for a special purpose. • After some convincing, the King and Queen of Spain agreed to finance Columbus’s expedition. • King Ferdinand and Isabella hoped to make money on gold and spices, as well as spread the Catholic religion.

Notes- Lesson 1 • August 3, 1492 Columbus set sail with three ships: The Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. • On October 12, they reached land…Columbus claimed the island for Spain. • Columbus met natives from the island which he named Taino (Indian) because he had believed he reached the Indies. Actually it is believed that Columbus had reached an island in the Bahamas. This area was later named the West Indies.

  7. Notes- Lesson 1 • Columbus led three more expeditions to the Americas • On the second voyage Columbus set sail with 17 ships loaded with supplies and settlers to start a new colony in this new world. • A colony is a settlement far from the country that rules it.

  10. Notes-Lesson 1 • Christopher Columbus showed Europeans a way to the Americas. Later Amerigo Vespucci realizing that this was not part of the Indies names the new world the Americas.
