  1. Digital Photography How to get a great shot

  2. Choosing a format • Most cameras are designed to be held horizontally for comfort, so most pictures are taken this way • But, when you turn the camera vertical, you will be surprised at the results • Sometimes the best way to compose a photograph is to use the tall and narrow format

  3. Which works better? • Horizontal format • Vertical format

  4. A good composition is key • A composition is an arrangement of things and an artist arranges things to pull the viewer to what is important in the work of art • If you have too many objects in your picture the viewer may be distracted and may not find what’s important

  5. Try to use less, sometimes simplicity is best!

  6. Where do you stand? • Your position is a valuable tool when capturing a great photograph • Try kneeling down to take a picture (worms eye view) • Take the picture from a higher vantage point (birds eye view) • Using the zoom lenses is also a great way to find the perfect shot, be experimental!

  7. Examples of different positions… • Birds eye view

  8. Examples of different positions… • Worms eye view

  9. Rule of Thirds • Rule of thirds is used often with photographers as well as artists • Imaginary lines are drawn dividing the image into thirds both horizontally and vertically. • You place important elements of your composition where these lines intersect • Rule of thirds helps produce nicely balanced pictures

  10. Examples of rule of thirds

  11. Examples of different positions… • Using the zoom lenses

  12. Get up close to your object and fill the frame • Taking a shot too far away doesn’t always make an interesting shot • Get up close to your object and fill the frame

  13. Close-upMedium shotLong shot

  14. Capture a friend using the following techniques: • Birds eye view • Worms eye view • Rule of thirds • Close up • Medium Shot • Long Shot • You must get two of each, a total of 12 • Try using different people
