  1. Wolf Hunting Marni Gutman Abby Durecka Emily Reem

  2. Issue at Hand • Should hunting wolves be legal? • Wolves are attacking livestock and dogs • Wolves have been protected in Michigan for 50 years after a close extinction • Fewer than 700 wolves in the entire state • Politicians rush to open a sport hunting season for wolves

  3. Wolf – Dog • Wolves are territorial and will defend themselves if threatened by coyotes, dogs, or other wolves • Most conflicts occur during bear training and hunting seasons • Overlap of wolf pups at homesite (pups stay at their homesite until they’re old enough to travel with adults – early fall

  4. Currently • Hunting is legal to protect livestock • Limited harvest of 43 wolves in the U.P. • The regulations create the Wolf Management Unit, “WMU” • WMU A: In Gogebic County in the far west Upper Peninsula – 16 wolves • WMU B: In portions of Baraga, Houghton, Ontonagon and Gogebic counties – 19 wolves • WMU C: In portions of Luce and Mackinac counties – 8 wolves • Hunting Season (Nov. 15 – Dec. 31) • Current law: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-153-10371_10402-308071--,00.html

  5. Petition • Keep Michigan Wolves Protected has gathered enough signatures to overturn the murder of wolves • Their first referendum allowed the petition to fall into place • The second referendum allows KMWP to be in the 2014 ballot • Aim: 225,000 signatures

  6. License • Residents: $100 • Nonresidents: $500 • 10+ of age • Must have a previous hunting license or taken a state-approved hunter safety education course

  7. Wolf Population

  8. Group Belief We as a group, disagree with the idea of hunting wolves for game. Previously noted, wolves were on the brink of extinction making it illegal to kill. Why would politicians make it legal to kill them when the original fate for wolves was extinction?

  9. Pro • “I’m an avid hunter, so this an opportunity that doesn't come along very often,” he said, “It may be the last hunt, too, if the environmentalists get their way”

  10. Con “The gray wolf is significant to our culture,” said tribal spokesman Frank Cloutier. “It’s a part of our creation story, very significant to who we are and what we believe”
