Who My Explorer Is • My Explorer is Antoine de La Cadillac. He was born March 5, 1658at Saint- Nicolas- Grave, France and died October 16,1730 • When He was 16 he entered the army and saw several years of service in France. • When he was 25 he departed from France to the New World. • 1683 he sailed to Canada (from France). • at Castel Sarrusin, France. • When he was 16 he joined the army and saw 7 yrs. What My Explorer Did • Antoine de La Cadillac was the commander of the fort St. Ignace, the 3rd French governor of Louisiana, soldier, Leader and commandant of the post in Mackinac. He founded Detroit “ La Ville d’ Etroit” and built Fort Ponchartrain with some people.
When My Explorer Explored • My explorer explored in 1694-1697 and became the commandant of the post of Mackinac ( in which is now MI). In 1694 he was the commander of fort De Buade, Modern Day St. Ignace MI. In 1701, he founded Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit, the beginning of Modern Detroit, which he commanded until 1710. He was 26 when he first explored.
Where My Explorer Went • Antoine de La Cadillac explored New France which is now in North America in MI. New France was called La Ville d’ Etroit City of the straight . Cadillac took 50 soldiers, 50 workers, 100 Native Americans and 2 priests to build Fort Pontchartrain and the town that grew around it was New France.
Why My Explorer Explored • In 1699, Cadillac went to France to urge establishment of a post on the Detroit River which he believed would after a better statistic position against the English than Mackinac. He was looking for a place to put a fort on the Southern part of MI at what is now Detroit. He did find a place to put a fort on the Southern part of MI. He built Fort Ponchartrain on La Ville d’ Etroit . He found North and South Carolina and familiarized himself with the Native Indian languages and habits.
How He Got Along With Native Americans • Antoine de La Cadillac and the Native Americans got along great because they agreed to build Fort Pontchartrain with him. Though they were trapping many animals. Cadillac did not learn their language. Cadillac also didn’t trade with the native Americans or try to change their traditions.
