  2. objectives • Find out about the geography of Greece. • Learn about the rise of civilization in ancient Greece. • Study the start of government in ancient Greece.

  3. Reading skills • When you come across an unfamiliar/difficult word, you can break the word into parts. • Roots Is the base of the word • Suffix Is attached to the end of the root EX: democracy ( Greek roots) demos (people) + kratia (rule) = rule by the people

The reading (pg-9) The geography of Greece: • Greece is a land made up of peninsulas and small islands. • Greece is good for growing crops • The ancient Greeks were all islanders. • Some lived on real islands • Others lived in communities separated from each other by mountains • Each community developed its own customs and beliefs

The reading (pg-9) The Rise of Greek Civilization: • The Minoans, sea traders, lived on the island of Crete (3000-1100 B.C.) • 400 B.C., their civilization declined • The Mycenaean lived on the mainland • 400 B.C., the height of their power • Broke an early form of modern Greek • Spread their power through conquest

  7. The Trojan War (pg-9) • Between Greece and Troy • After the war • Greek civilization fell apart (Greece’s Dark Ages) • People were very poor • The forgot the art of writing • People resettled near hills • They built fortifications to protect them from attack

The reading (pg-10) • Governing Ancient Greece: • 750 B.C., cities began to form • Ruled by aristocrats • Middle class made up of merchants and artisans and became more powerful than the aristocrats • Tyrants took over the governments, and were supported by the middle class • Too harsh tyrants were replaced by democracy, Athens.
