rhythm & balance. 'Balance is a fundamental human condition…'. balance. balance becomes the relationship of elements in a design we react instinctually to balance in a design
E N D
balance • balance becomes the relationship of elements in a design • we react instinctually to balance in a design • heightened awareness of balance allows us to manipulate space better: to create designs where the relationship of elements is strengthened
symmetry • elements are oriented along a common axis • with reflected symmetry (also called bilateral symmetry), objects are aligned along a horizontal or vertical (or both) axis • rotational symmetry means an object can be rotated a certain amount and look the same
asymmetry • 'organic' placement of elements in a composition • relies on interaction of positive and negative space, the relationship of elements to edges, and of elements to each other to create balance • dynamic
repetition • repetition breeds familiarity • repetition with variation makes for more visually interesting compositions • repetition can be modular: repeating the exact shape, or can use similar shapes, differing in size, color, vector, etc.
rhythm • rhythm is a combination of repetition and variety • rhythm controls pacing and movement through a design • rhythm is connected to continuity in a design
