  2. Usability Problems • No power button • Labels not next to buttons • Buttons not distinctive • More functions than buttons

  3. Task Analysis • Find the chorus of a specified song and pause it there • Turning the MP3 player on • Browsing, Playing & Pausing songs • Play the chorus for me • Using the speakers • Turning up the volume • Find a specific point in the song • Fast-forwarding and rewinding • Turn the MP3 player off

  4. User Studies • Users • Male & female; college aged; inexperienced with the device • Problems encountered • Turning it on (confusing labels) • Controlling volume (placement/distinctiveness of buttons) • Fast-forwarding/rewinding (low gain vs. song browsing) • Knowing what buttons are for (meaningfulness/ location)

  5. Solutions • Add a power button • Move less used functions to menus; separate other functions into more buttons • Place commonly used buttons near each other • Make buttons distinctive (eg. Arrows/+- for volume, double arrows for song navigation) • Make labels more meaningful • Increase gain for fast-forwarding/rewinding
