  1. WP B1/B2 : European PDA digital assessment Digital assessment with random data 1)Wims 2)How does it work? 3)Examples and experiences

  2. GENERAL PRESENTATION OF WIMS WIMS (WWW Interactive Multipurpose Server) is an on line learning platform All the activities are carried out on the users' web browser. Two ways to access to activities • Self-service resources • Virtual classes • A virtual class is a space where students can work under the guidance of a supervisor (teacher) • Virtual class is created by a teacher • Students can register into the class as participants. • The teacher assigns works for the students, organized in worksheets. • The teacher manage works items like exercises (determines score, can consult achievements and scores of each student) • Each virtual class also contains a message board • The teacher can also create his own interactive exercises

  3. GENERAL PRESENTATION OF WIMS WIMS : main functionalities: • Bank of interactive exercises with random data (created by teachers) • Interfacing with several software (calculation, drawing, Typography) • Bank of Tools for calculation , simulation, drawing • Recreation tools

  4. Interactive exercises with random data • How does it work ? A very simple example • Contrary to a simple interactive exercise when you use it for the second time in wims the question is similar but different . • Example : • the first question can be : what is the sum of 3+4 ? • The next question will be : what is the sum of 2+33 ? • And so for the infinity differents combinations for the next other times • Structure of the questions are the same but the input data are randomly generated by the server • Obviouly answers are also different and associated with questions!

  5. NEW PEDAGOGICAL USE • In what way does the use of technology change the learning outcomes for students : • Formative assessment : • Can train on the same exercise as long as they want • less afraid of making a mistake • Can choose difficulty level • Can test and verify his own hypothesis • see immediately if they have understood the exercises’ concepts. • It’s like a supervisor who give personalised exercises and score them at each attempt

  6. NEW PEDAGOGICAL USE In what way does the use of technology change the learning outcomes for students : Summative assessment scored exercises give the possibility to prove their own progress Students can train to a mock exam or pass an actual exam Diagnostic assessment. Can be tested before to pass to the next diffficulty level of exercices 6/12

  7. NEW PEDAGOGICAL USE In what way does the use of technology change teaching?: Teachers: Can give interactive activities with different levels with a progress step by step Can follow improvement of each student Are sure that students aren’t able to copy on the others Can propose to the student to consult resources in regard of his score 7/12

  8. NEW PEDAGOGICAL USE In what way does the use of technology change teaching?: Teachers: can create secured exams using exercises existing in the server Can create public questions-test Can shareinteractive exercises and use ideas of others teachers 8/12

  9. SOME EXAMPLES OF USES One example about Calculations with a clock One example with graphic exercise One example with languages learning One example on worksheets 9/12

  10. SOME EXPERIENCES OF USE Sites in the world Use of wims in Universite Paris Sud for one year A session is a work session with a connection of variable length 10/12
