Vocabulary • Cultural Diffusion- The natural blending of cultures. • 3 Field System- Agricultural innovation that allowed for more crops to be grown. • Guilds- An association of workers with the same occupation. • Magna Carta- Document that limited the power of the English King and protected the power of nobles. • Parliament- Law making body of England that focused on taxation. • Black Plague- Known as “The Black Death”, it wiped out over ½ of Europe’s population.
Warm up • How was the Church able to control Kings?
Because of increased cultural diffusion from the Crusades new ideas reached Europe. • New Harness • Farmers could use horses instead of oxen = more fields plowed faster! • 3 Field System • Farmers grew crops on 2 out of 3 fields while the other rested = more and better food production = • Population Increase
This all allowed for specialization. • Fewer people needed to farm so people moved back to cities and trade increased! • Guilds formed • Guilds were associations of people who had the same occupation who set wages and monitored the quality of work done.
As trade increased, money began to circulate and there was a financial revolution! • With all this trade, ideas spread and learning became important again. • As people left manors, some services provided by the Lords were no longer being met in towns…
Political • No leadership! Kings take over regions to rule and keep peace • Economic • No one to collect taxes, distribute land or run trade so…Kings begin to control economy of an area,
Religion • Church becomes regionally controlled and Kings become more powerful than local Church officials • Defense • Knights become loyal to Kings, people become loyal to Kings because they keep regions safe! (National armies)
Who takes over this role? Kings! Society is now reconfigured into Nation States instead of towns, villages, and manors • People now have a national pride based on who they are and who their King is (National identity)
Nations use local languages called vernacular • Writers bring stories to the people by writing in vernacular • Ultimately, the only thing still unifying Europe is the Church, yet its power had diminished.
National Laws were set up instead of Church Laws. • Magna Carta (1215) • English document that gave rights to the nobility • Parliament (1295) • Legislative Body that voted on taxation • Thus due to the Crusades and plague, manors break up and Nations begin to form
Closing • What brought about the end of feudalism?
