  1. Battles of the Civil War Objective: Analyze the significance of the 3 major Civil War battles: Antietam, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg.

  2. Directions 1. Copy the notes into page 66 of ISN. 2. Create 1 Q column question for each of the 3 battles in the notes about why they were so important 3. Highlight/color code the questions and answers 4. On the bottom of page 65 write a summary that tells why each of the 3 battles were so important. 5. On the top of page 65 create a reflection to show how you will remember why each of the 3 battles was so important.

  3. Battle of Antietam-Bloodiest Battle • Lee’s plans were found by a Union soldier. • General McClellan from the North moved slowly to attack the Confederacy. • McClellan’s troops faced Lee’s troops at the Antietam Creek in Sharpsburg, Maryland. • This was the bloodiest day in all of American history! i. 25,000 men died. The south retreated.

  4. Gettysburg- The Turning Point • Off to find shoes in the North, Lee’s Confederate troops marched to Gettysburg. • They ran into the Union troops and battled for 3 days. • The Union struggled to hold their ground at Cemetery Ridge. • Lee sent his troops with General Pickett to attack the Union from behind their lines.

  5. Gettysburg cont… E. The turning point came when Pickett’s Charge failed. F. The Confederates were getting defeated. G. Lee lost over 1/3 of his army and had to retreat back to Virginia.

  6. Vicksburg- Completes the Plan • Ulysses S. Grant used his troops in Vicksburg to defeat the Confederacy. • He surrounded the city, occupied by the Confederates and shut them off from any supplies. • After running out of food, the Confederates surrendered. • This Union victory completed the final part of the Anaconda Plan! • The Union controlled the Mississippi River and split the Confederacy in half!
