Mitosis http://genetics.gsk.com/graphics/mitosis-big.gif
Mitosis • Nucleus divides to form two nuclei. • Spindles = cell structures made up of both centrioles and individual microtubule fibers that move the chromosomes
Cell Cycle • Interphase • Prophase • Metaphase • Anaphase • Telophase • Cytokinesis
Prophase • Chromosomes become visible • Nuclear membrane dissolves • Spindle forms
Metaphase • Chromosomes line up along equator • Spindles link the chromatids of each chromosome to opposite poles.
Anaphase • Centromere divides. • Chromatids move toward opposite poles. • The chromatids are now called chromosomes.
Telophase • Nuclear membrane forms at each pole. • Chromosomes uncoil. • Spindle dissolves. • Cytokinesis begins.
Cytokinesis • Cell membrane is pinched in half by a belt of protein threads. • The cytoplasm is divided in half. • The cell membrane grows to enclose each cell, forming two separate cells.
