What will I do to establish or maintain classroom rules or procedures?
In the classroom… • Students need rules and procedures regardless of how well behaved the students are • Rules and procedures should be established at the beginning of the school year, but there are many times when rules and procedures must be added or altered • Without effective rules and procedures, teaching (and consequently learning) is inhibited
Step 1: Organized the classroom for effective teaching and learning • Teaching and Learning • Access to learning centers, technology, and equipment • How many centers? • How many computers? • What type of equipment • Decorating the room • Posters • Organization • Materials • Pens, Pencils, Markers, books • Desks, Chairs, and Teacher work area • How many students
Step 2: Establish a small set of classroom rules and procedures General Classroom Behavior: • Elementary: • Interrupting the teacher or others • Hitting or shoving others • Secondary: • Bringing materials to class • Being in the assigned seat at the beginning of class • Respecting and being polite to others • Talking or not talking at specific times • Respecting other people’s property
Step 2: Establish a small set of classroom rules and procedures • Beginning and Ending of the School Day or the Period: • Elementary: • Beginning the school day with specific social activities • Beginning the day with the pledge of allegiance • Doing administrative activities • Ending the day by cleaning the room and individual tasks • Ending the day by putting away materials • Secondary: • Taking attendance at the beginning of class • At the beginning of the period, addressing students who missed the work • Dealing with students who are tardy at the beginning of the period • Ending the period with clear expectations for homework
Step 2: Establish a small set of classroom rules and procedures • Transitions and Interruptions: • Elementary: • Leaving the room • Returning to the room • Use of the bathroom • Use of the library and resource room • Use of the cafeteria • Use of the playground • Fire and disaster drills • Classroom helpers • Secondary: • Leaving the room • Returning to the room • Fire and disaster drills • Split lunch period
Establish a small set of classroom rules and procedures • Use of materials and Equipment • Elementary/ Secondary: • Using Materials • Storing Materials • Disruption of materials
Step 2: Establish a small set of classroom rules and procedures • Group Work: • Elementary/Secondary: • Leadership roles within the group • Moving in and out of the group • Sharing materials and ideas • Seat Work: • Paying attention • Not talking during presentations • Focused on the task at hand
Interact with students about classroom rules and procedures • Have students help in the process of creating classroom rules and procedures • Make sure that the rules and procedures are clearly communicated and are consistent
Step 4: Periodically review rules and procedures, making changes as necessary • Rules may need to change and adapt with different situations in the classroom. • Best time to do this is at the beginning of the school year • Students can determine what rules might be important in a classroom • Rules should be posted where students can view them
Step 5: Use classroom meetings • Help to design and maintain rules • Students are able to collaborate and share ideas • Builds community within the classroom
