Problem 5 Brandon Kurth Bill Sattler Kay McMahon Emily Barabe
Scenario • Farmette in Western Dane County • 8 cow-calf pairs • 5 Horses • 4 mares (2 pregnant) • 1 gelding
What happened • One of the mares ( 9 months preg) aborts • All horses were vaccinated with a 4-way vaccine last May • In Jan/Feb two of the horses came back from a show • All developed respiratory problems • The other mare is 6 months pregnant- what should be done to prevent her from aborting
Vaccine Schedule • 4-way vaccine (annually given in spring) • East and West Equine Encephalomyelitis • Influenza • Tetanus
What caused the abortion? • Equine Herpes Virus (Rhinopneumonitis) • Two strains • EHV1- Causes abortions (6-11 months) • EHV4- Causes respiratory problems • Transmitted by: • Direct feed and water contamination • Direct contact with other infected horses
EHV • Causes abortion 2 weeks- 4 months after respiratory symptoms are present • 85% of the abortions happen in the last three months of gestation • Can happen without any other symptoms
Prevention • Proper shots • EHV vaccine at 3,5,7,9 months of gestation • 4- way yearly booster for all horses • Strangles • Rabies • Potomac Horse Fever • Isolation of the mares after traveling • Prevents spreading
What about the 6 month Mare? • Begin EHV vaccination as soon as possible • Start at 6 months • Continue at 7 months and at 9 months • Isolation of the 6 month mare
Testing • Send in tissues • either the lung, spleen, liver, and adrenal glands are usually used to test for EHV • Virus detection • With a PCR or culture test
