  1. Reality TV and Big Brother

  2. Why is Big Brother so successful? • Big Brother is a reality TV series broadcast in the UK and Ireland on Channel 4 and E4, and on S4C in Wales. • Big Brother uses cameras that watch everyone in the house and gives them no privacy in front of society. CBS has found a way of trivializing it into a prime time TV. • Big Brother uses social issues and a hybridised genre to attract their audiences. By having a hybrid people do not get bored, and they gain fulfilment by watching others in some way suffer and not get on within the house, compared to their lives outside of the house. • Big Brother’s typical attracted target market is fitted between an 18-35-year-old. The audience however is somewhat female skewed. • Big Brother uses the same female presenter Davina McCalll who hosts the Live Evictionshows, as well as the first episode of the series and the Live Finale.

  3. Why is Big Brother so successful? • Big Brother have held open auditions since Big Brother 5, but before this the auditions had to be sent in on tape. The tenth series auditions were held on YouTube where people could upload their auditions. This makes Big Brother more successful as it will put an end to the rumours that the housemates are selected from agencies or have connections with Big Brother or Channel 4. • Big Brother covers many different aspects within the series such as: • -launch night to get an audience involved into who’s in the series • -life in the house • -the diary room where the contestants can speak out to the general public • they shop like anyone’s everyday life • there is nominations where people suffer • live evictions • Final • These all contribute to the public’s need on to watch people suffer and to keep them interested into who’s going out and all the arguments and social issues people have in an environment where they do not know anyone.

  4. Why is Big Brother so successful? • Big Brother have expanded out so if anyone misses a show then can then watch the action from within the House and this can then be streamed live over the Internet for a one-off fee subscription that lasts to the end of the series, and free to broadband customers of sponsors Virgin Media. • Channel 4's sister station E4 has also carries live pictures and audio from the Big Brother House. An interactive service available to digital satellite and cable viewers allows 24/7 access to the stream, even when E4 is carrying normal programming. • Big Brother has been highly publicised in the UK, more or less all the leading tabloid newspapers and gossip magazines cover the series. The show has also made headlines on leading news channels such as BBC, ITV, Channel 4, CNN and Sky news.

  5. What is Convergence and New Technologies? • Emerging technologies and converging technologies are terms used to cover various cutting-edge developments. • All modes of communication and information are being continually reformed to adapt to new demands of technologies, changing in the way we create, consume, learn and interact with each other. • Consumer behaviour is changing and the way marketers reach their audience must also change. Marketers are searching for new ways to not only reach their customers, but to understand them, to peer inside their minds. • Big Brother has been responsible for integrating many media and communication channels in order to produce one interactive show. • Radio, television, computing, Internet and telecommunications have converged to generate the success that shows like Big Brother are used to. Whilst televisions enabled audiences the view the show in half hour or hour blocks, in conjunction with the Internet, people were able to access live image and audio footage of the housemates at any time.

  6. Endemol • Endemol was founded in 1994 • One notable success has been the Big Brother "reality television" show, with versions in many countries after the initial Dutch version. However the most profitable programme for Endemol is Deal or No Dealwhich has now been sold to over 100 countries.

  7. Globalisation • The term "globalisation" is frequently used but seldom defined. It refers to the rapid increase in the share of economic activity taking place across national boundaries. • Big Brother has been globalised around the world and has been copied in different countries such as, America and Africa.
