  3. The benefits of PPE • Most pressing issues of contemporary concern need to be addressed from several perspectives. • For example: • Global financial crisis • Climate change • World poverty

  4. PPE at Warwick • New degree started in 2004 • In 2010, fourth cohort graduated • High and growing numbers of applications and students • In 2010/11 overshot intake target: 105 students expected

  5. PPE at Warwick • Oxford PPE: a long history from 1920s • Oxford PPE: a “pillar model” • Warwick PPE: a “bridge model” • Warwick PPE: a core element of QT

  6. The Three Departments • Each large by the standards of its discipline • Each awarded maximum points in the external review of Teaching Quality • Each very active in research at the frontiers of the subject • They are side by side in one building

  7. Liaison and integration • Director of Studies • Role rotates among 3 Departments • Executive committee: 3 departmental convenors • Dedicated undergraduate office for PPE • An active student PPE Society • PPE lectures

  8. Syllabus design principles • Rigour: exposure to the main techniques, approaches and concerns of three disciplines • Flexibility: wide choice, consistent with a coherent degree programme • Interdisciplinarity: integration of the disciplinary perspectives in the 3rd year

  9. Structure of the Programme1st year 5 full-year modules: • Economics 1 • Introduction to Politics • Introduction to Philosophy • Quantitative Techniques • Option (wide choice)

  10. Structure of the ProgrammeHonours level (2nd and 3rd years) • 8 full-year modules • Three Pathways • Tripartite: Phil, Pol, and Econ • Bipartite: Phil/Pol, Econ/Phil, Pol/Econ • Bipartite, Economics Major: Econ/Phil, Econ/Pol • Economics Major Pathway leads to a BSc, all others to a BA

  11. Structure of the Programme • Pathways defined by core modules • All offer a wide range of options • All share 3rd year module “Principles of Political Economy” • Integrate perspectives of the three disciplines • Thematic focus: national and global policy-making

  12. PPE Society • Very active • Runs talks and social events • eg last year Robert Skidelsky • this term Jonathan Wolff (UCL) • Works with staff to help students get the most out of their studies (e.g.mentoring)

  13. Studying Abroad • PPE participates in Departmental Exchange Programmes • Philosophy, PAIS exchange programmes with North American Universities • e.g. Queens, Kingston; Wisconsin • Spend 2nd year abroad

  14. Studying Abroad • PPE students can participate in Erasmus programme • Spend a year at Universities in places such as Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Antwerp, or Bergen • Adds a year to the course

  15. Applying • A-levels: A*AA + b (ex GS) • No subject requirements • IB: 38 • Maths requirement: • A at GCSE

  16. Applying • Admissions decisions by taking a view about the candidate based on all of: • (Expected) A level grades • UCAS Reference • UCAS Personal Statement

  17. Careers • 50% of posts open to any discipline • Warwick has an excellent reputation among employers • University has a very good careers service

Careers - Employment • Philosophy graduates: • marketing and advertising, education, finance, legal and political work • PAIS graduates: • political work (parties, lobbying groups), public service (e.g. NHS), education, journalism/media, finance • Economics graduates: • accounting, banking and finance, consulting

  19. Careers – Further study • PPE graduates: • Development economics • Economics • Political philosophy • Public Policy • Law • Accounting & finance • At top universities such as LSE, Oxford, Warwick
