  3. About LLS Mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS is a non-profit organization that funds RESEARCH and helps PATIENTS.

  4. Cancer- Defined A general term for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and do not properly carry out their normal function. • Cancer is not contagious. • We don’t know what causes blood cancer.

  5. Blood Cancers • Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma are cancers that originate in the bone marrow or lymphatic tissues. • An estimated 957,902 people in the US are currently living with blood cancer. • Leukemia is the most common cancer in children and young adults.

  7. Pennies for Patients • National community service project • 20th annual campaign in Minnesota • More than $140 million raised nationally and $5.9 million locally. • Students donate spare change in honor of local student survivors - HEROES

  8. Honored Hero Jacie • Diagnosed with leukemia in October of 2008 • Finished chemo in Dec. • In Kindergarten • Loves mac & cheese, Sponge Bob and the Littlest Pet Shop

Pennies for Patients Details • Last year, 777 schools in MN, ND and SD raised $630,000 for the research and patient programs of LLS • Bring donations (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars, checks) to your homeroom DATES • Our school’s goal is $XXX.XX. If we reach our goal, the top classroom get a Domino’s Pizza Party!

  11. Pennies for Patients Details • Each grade has its own Honored Hero • SPECIAL INCENTIVES • SPECIAL EVENTS • Check your couch cushions, car floors and coin containers and remember that EVERY PENNY COUNTS!
