  2. What is Biomimicry • Simply stated, biomimicry is merely looking at natural phenomena and applying their designs to real-world purposes • It is NOT changing nature, but rather incorporating its natural ideas and designs to improve efficiency, conservation, and sustainability efforts

  3. Consider a Cat’s Tongue • All cats have unique tongues – domestic and wild • Their tongue’s anatomy allows cats to cleanly and gently consume liquid by only barely touching it • They somehow manage to balance gravity and inertia while moving the liquid into their mouths

Consider a Cat’s Tongue • A cat’s tongue is designed to efficiently propel liquid from a container into its mouth using only the tip of the tongue • The tongue is often, but not always, curled as the cat licks the liquid • As the cat licks, a column of fluid appears to be lifted into its mouth

  6. Built-In Brush • Another unique feature of a cat’s tongue is the many papillae, or barbed hairs, on the surface of the cat’s tongue • The papillae assist the cat with grooming chores and swallowing efforts

  8. Culinary Applications • The anatomical design of a cat’s tongue can potentially be adapted for several culinary tasks • New tools that are based on the structure and functionality of the feline tongue could be designed to perform tasks with less energy

  9. Culinary Applications • Potential tasks that might be accomplished with this feline-based design include: • Stirring / Gentle Agitation of fragile liquids to incorporate ingredients • Cleaning delicate food items that require special care • Creation of task-specific brushes

  10. Summary • Adapting the anatomical features and abilities of a cats tongue to create tools that will improve culinary tasks is an example of biomimicry. • Nature has been showing us for centuries how well it works – we have only begun to pay attention.
