2. A Word About Warnings • Warnings are only valuable if they are true, and if they are headed.

3. Tale of the Titanic • When the unsinkable Titanic sank, warning after warning had been sent to tell them they were speeding into an ice-field.

4. Caught Up In The Trivia • Too many people today are going to be caught up in the trivia of life and miss the warnings that the end is coming and now is the time to be right with God.

5. Luke Chapter 11 • Luke records Jesus teaching about prayer (1-4), God’s compassion (5-13) a kingdom divided (14-28), the call for repentance and a warning of a stubborn heart (29-32), and true, internal, spirituality (33-35). • The chapter concludes with Jesus presenting six warnings to the Pharisees and Teachers of the Law, but they can apply to us today (37-54), so let’s read what Jesus has to say.

6. Applying the Text • As we get into the text I would like us to see what warnings we need most, and how we respond to the warnings that are presented.

Luke 11:37-54 Page 1615 • When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table. 38 But the Pharisee, noticing that Jesus did not first wash before the meal, was surprised. •  39 Then the Lord said to him, "Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40 You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give what is inside the dish to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.

8. Luke 11:37-54 Page 1615 • "Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.

Luke 11:37-54 Page 1615 • 43 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. • This happens when we want acceptance at the cost of faithfulness. •  44 "Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without knowing it." • This is when we neglect warning others when we know we should.

Luke 11:37-54 Page 1615 • 45 One of the experts in the law answered him, "Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also." •  46 Jesus replied, "And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them. • This is when we judge others without being faithful ourselves.

11. 47 "Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom said, `I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.' 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.

12. Luke 11:37-54 Page 1615 • 52 "Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering." • This is when we do not share the Good News and fall away ourselves. • They did not take these warnings to heart and it made them bitter, not better! • LK 11:53 When Jesus left there, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.

13. In Your Life? • Did any of those speak to you? • Is it time for a course correction? • How have you corrected your course already?

Luke 12:1-12 Page 1616 • Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.

Luke 12:1-12 Page 1616 • 4 "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Luke 12:1-12 Page 1616 • 8 "I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God. 9 But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

17. Luke 12:1-12 Page 1616 • 11 "When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."

18. Luke Chapter 12 • The rest of chapter 12 includes Jesus warning about greed and self-sufficiency (13-21), worry (22-34), remaining faithful while we wait (35-48), keeping Jesus first (49-53), and the danger of ignoring the truth of Christ’s return (54-59).

19. Luke Chapter 13 • Luke records Jesus warnings about the need to repent instead of compare (1-9), being legalistic rather than compassionate (10-17), the pervasive nature of the kingdom (18-21), 22-29 is a great section about Jesus’ warning of who will enter the kingdom and the need to do so now while there is time, and the chapter ends with Jesus’ sorrow over Jerusalem and another prediction of His upcoming death (31-35).

20. Luke Chapter 14 • Three more accounts of warnings. Once again we have a warning to be compassionate (1-6) and this is followed by a warning about being humble and being kind to those who cannot repay you (7-14). The idea of the banquet flows into 15-23 and the warning to not get distracted in our faith or we may lose our spot at the banquet. The chapter ends with the reminder to have Jesus as our first relationship and to count the cost of following so let’s read those words.

Luke 14:25-35 Page 1623 • Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters--yes, even his own life--he cannot be my disciple. 27 And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

22. Luke Chapter 14 • 28 "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? 29 For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, 30 saying, `This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.'

23. Luke Chapter 14 • 31 "Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

24. Luke Chapter 14 • 34 "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. • "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

25. Conclusion • Luke recorded these warnings for Theophilus and they are a benefit for us today. • The main reminder that I come away with is to not be distracted with things of the world and to keep focused on Jesus and the work of the kingdom.

26. Taking It Home: • Did you hear a warning that you could apply this week? • These warnings are meant to make us better, not make us bitter.
