  7. How we got our Bible When we talk about the canon of Scripture we mean the books that meet an officially accepted list of books (they meet all the rules)

  9. How we got our O.T. RULES Inspiration by God Exodus 24:3-4 When Moses went and told the people all the LORD’s words and laws, they responded with one voice, “Everything the LORD has said we will do.” Moses then wrote down everything the LORD had said.

  18. Some books that got left out. Apocryphal • Don’t meet the requirements of cannon • Historical and geographical inaccuracies • teach false doctrines or disagree with other accepted scripture

  19. Some books that got left out. Apocryphal Martin Luther criticized the church for not having biblical support for such doctrines as praying for the dead. In 1546 a council against the reformation (Trent) gave the apocryphal books canonical status in the Roman Catholic Church, this way the catholic church had scriptural support for this, and other doctrines.

  24. So… Why So Many Translations? From 335-323 Alexander the Great conquered much of the world and Greek became the official language.

  26. So… Why So Many Translations? Around 250-150 B.C. the Hebrew scriptures were translated into Greek. This is called the Septuagint (or LXX for the 70 men who worked on it.)

  27. So… Why So Many Translations? The Septuagint was then translated into Latin which was the spoken language of much of the World after Rome took over from Greece

  32. In 382, Damascus, the Bishop of Rome commissioned a guy named Jerome to make a revision of the old Latin textso that all the Bibles would be the same – this is called the Latin Vulgate

  33. “You urge me to revise the old Latin version, and, as it were, to sit in judgment on the copies of the Scriptures which are now scattered throughout the whole world; and, inasmuch as they differ from one another, you would have me decide which of them agree with the Greek original. The labor is one of love, but at the same time both perilous and presumptuous; for in judging others I must be content to be judged by all....” Jerome

  34. Sure enough there was a lot of criticism and people against this translation, Jerome used certain sources and rejected certain manuscripts. Jerome's Bible is NO GOOD!!

  35. So… Why So Many Translations? Soon there were many variations of the Latin Vulgate all over the world.

  36. So… Why So Many Translations? AGAIN, Anybody could make a copy and it didn’t have to be a good one!

  37. So… Why So Many Translations? The Catholic Church Counsel of Trent (1563) Declared the Vulgate is the official, authentic version of the Bible

  38. No one could agree which was the correct vulgate and they argued and rewrote the Bible until 1969

  39. So… Why So Many Translations? Others had a problem with the fact that the Catholic Church believed the common man had no business reading their own Bible. They also believed that Christ, not the pope, was the head of the church. Not until 1382 did we have a Bible translated into English By John Wycliffe

  40. So… Why So Many Translations? Meanwhile there were men who believed that the Catholic church was WRONG about certain things they were teaching Martin Luther

  41. So… Why So Many Translations? Luther was a priest who was troubled by the church selling indulgences – this was a way to get your dead relatives into heaven, you could pay the church and they would be forgiven and get to go to heaven.

  42. So… Why So Many Translations? Martin tried to fix the Catholic church and was excommunicated for his efforts, he left the Church and the Protestant Reformation was born Martin Luther

  43. So… Why So Many Translations? In 1456 Johann Gutenberg invented a printing press that used movable type – the first book he published was the Bible.

  44. So… Why So Many Translations? Soon there were many different translations of the Bible being printed in English Miles Coverdale 1534 John Wycliffe 1382 Thomas Matthew 1535 John Purvey 1395 The Geneva Bible 1557 William Tyndale 1525

  45. So… Why So Many Translations? The question is, where were they getting the Greek manuscripts from to copy into English?

  46. So… Why So Many Translations? In 313 the emperor Constantine, legalized Christianity. Suddenly it was legal to be a Christian!! Bibles went from being destroyed to being copied

  47. So… Why So Many Translations? Thousands of copies were made from Greek from 330 onward. Copies tended to be made to agree with each other by scribes who edited rough passages until the Byzantine text was a smooth translation.

  49. So… Why So Many Translations? He revised his Bible several times over the next 20 years and in 1550 a publisher named Robert Estienne, also known as Stephanus, printed a Bible based on Erasmus's work.

  50. So… Why So Many Translations? This Greek Bible text was used to make several other Greek Bibles by a guy named Theodore Beza
