What is Trunking? • Trunking is a method to share several repeater frequencies among a lot of users offering a high grade of services. In Radio Trunking basic services (as listed below) are most commonly offered: • Automatic Channel Selection • Channel Privacy • Channel Exclusivity once aquired • Selective Calls • Wide Range of Additional Services
What is Trunking? In Radio Trunking there are 2 basic groups of Trunking Protocols: • Analog Trunking Protocols • Digital Trunking Protocols
What is Trunking? Analog Trunking Protocols are obsolete due to their low performance compared to the new technologies.
What is Trunking? Digital trunking protocols may be broken down in 3 main types: • Centralized • Decentralized • SmarTrunk Xpress™
Centralized Systems – Typical Operation • Most digital systems use an exclusive control channel • The data exchange between the subscriber unit and control channel is permanent • When a call is placed a data exchange is produced between the calling radio and the control channel, which assigns the voice channel • If the call is valid, all the radios must jump to the assigned voice channel to establish a conversation (this causes delays) • During the conversation the same procedure is performed each time a subscriber press PTT button to talk, and no one ensures that the conversation will be completed before all the channels are in use

Centralized Systems - Typical Operation • If subscriber ‘A’ initiates a call to subscribers ‘C’ and ‘E’, a call request is placed on the control channel

Centralized Systems - Typical Operation • Advantages: • High speed • High efficiency on large systems • Data transmission supported (AVL) • Disadvantages • High Cost • Proprietary terminals (captive market) • Exclusive licensing required • Use dedicated control channel frequencies • Low sensitivity • High power repeaters required • Very expensive Wide area solution
De-Centralized Systems - Operation • Distributed intelligence • Scan Based (radios scanning continuously thru all the system frequencies) • When a call starts, once authorized, all radios must stop on the channel where the call has been requested • Only the subscribers involved on that call stay on the channel. All other radios continue scanning • The call remains on the channel operating with instant PTT (like in standard repeater channel) • When the call ends, the radios start the scan process again • Call setup time becomes longer if more channels in the scan list are added. Large systems demands huge time to setup a call ( a 12 channels site demands about three seconds to setup a call)
De-Centralized Systems - Operation • Advantages • Low cost • NO Proprietary Terminals • NO exclusive channels • NO special license on most of the countries • Low cost networking • Disadvantages • Low call connect speed • Effective only on small size system
SmarTrunk Xpress® System Operation • All radios remain in idle mode on a dynamic Parking Channel • When a call is requested, if authorized, the controllers send a data frame, and all involved radios open the speaker immediately • The same data frame commands all other radios are to jump to the next parking channel • During the call, PTT transmit is instantaneous, and the channel remains occupied during the call • When a call ends, all radios on that call are ordered to jump to the current parking channel • If all channels are busy, the radios start roaming thru all the frequency channels, until receiving a site beacon to move to the available Parking Channel

SmarTrunk Xpress® System Operation • If user ‘A’ wants to place a call to users ‘C’ and ‘E’ then radio ‘A’ sends a call request to the repeater where is parked immediately
SmarTrunk Xpress® System Operation • Immediately, the repeater sends a data frame asking for users C and E to remains on this repeater opening the speaker but any other user must jump to channel 4 where the new parking channels has been placed
SmarTrunk Xpress® System Operation • As soon as the call ends, the site sends the disconnect frame pushing all radios radios in use to jump to the actual parking channel being ready to wait for a new call

ST-310X Multi-Site Roaming Network Features ST-510 SERVER - SYSTEM ENHANCEMENT SmarTrunk Xpress Single Site or Muti-Site Systems can be remotely controlled and monitored if connected to a computer via RS-232 COM Port The computer connects to the ST-310 RS-232 port. The ST-510 PC Server Software accesses to the whole system functionalities and shows the System Status (On Going Calls, Subscriber Unit Transmitting, Registered User ID’s at each site), and additionally, the ST-510 PC Server Software may be used for Radio Kill/Revive.
