  2. Background info • Born from 1963 - 1980 • Most were youths from the 80’s to 90’s • Name was coined by Robert Capa • Also known as Baby Bust • Born to World War Two Parents

  3. Characteristics of the generation • Individualistic (living through divorce • Technologically Adept (First generation to grow up with computers) • Flexible (work wise) • Value Work/Life Balance

  4. Popular Music in their youth • 1980’s • Heavy Metal - Metallica • Madonna • Michael Jackson – especially the “Thriller” album in 1982 • 1990’s • Hip hop music – Snoop Dog • Alternative Music – Nirvana • Pop Music Artists such as Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys

TV. shows • There were only 3 major broadcast networks in the 80’s– NBC, ABC and CBS. • Later on in the decade, Fox was introduced • Main shows were sit coms such as Cheers, cartoons such as Transformers and He-man. • Cable T.V. became popular in the 90’s • Seinfeld was the biggest sit com by far • Warner Brothers started broadcasting, showing shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Movies • 80’s movies were The Breakfast Club • Cheesy Horror Films came in, The Rocky Horror Picture Show coming up in 1975, people still watched it. • Back to the Future movies • Lots of nudity in the new movies, led to the rating of PG-13 • Return of the Jedi • 90’s movies such as Titanic • The Brady Bunch Movie • Pulp Fiction • Scary Movie

Fashion Pt2 • Colour was the major point of fashion in the 80’s with mixes of many opposing shades • Shoulder pads • Mini skirts were all the rage • Leg warmers • Huge earings • Fingerless gloves • Parachute pants • ‘Members Only’ jackets • Units (one size fits all) • Stretch-stirrup pants • Oversized pants

  10. Fashion Pt4 • 90’s sometimes called the ‘anti-fashion’ decade • ‘Grunge’ style – ripped jeans and flannel shirts • Overalls • Scrunchies • Baggy clothes • Denim was a major hit • Black, white and khaki • Sweaters • Tinted sunglasses • Sportswear • Air-walks or Vans • Body piercings

Health issues • AIDS outbreak in the 1980’s, first reported in 1981 • The beginning of understanding health issues in women are different to men • Oestrogen was found to be more effective to a women’s health • Genetic testing found women are more likely to have breast cancer through hereditary. • Tamoxifen, a drug, was found to help prevent breast cancer in certain women while Herceptin was found to be effective in treating advance breast cancer

Political issues/changes • 1980’s saw the globalisation of Australia’s economy • Allowed immigrants to boost population • Globalisation contested by a political struggle between globalists and anti-globalists • Paul Keating became Prime Minister in 1991 • Introduced Aboriginal Land Rights legislation • John Howard became Prime Minister in 1996

Science and technology • The first personal computer is introduced on the 12th of August, 1981 by Microsoft • 8th March, 1983, Apple brings out the first one with a mouse • CD ROM invented in 1984 • Hepatitis-B vaccine invented • Windows program invented by Microsoft • Cell phones invented in 1988 • HD TV invented in 1989 • World Wide Web, internet protocol (HTTP) and WWW language (HTML) createdby Tim Berners-Lee in 1990 • DVD invented in 1995
