No knife juggling skills needed Career Skills • Skills a chef or a cook need to have are Commitment, Communication, and Problem solving • Commitment-as a Chef or a cook you cant just give up on something because it is too hard or complicated, you need commitment to what you are doing • Communication- as a Chef or a cook you need to be able to tell your workers or boss your ideas about something, this helps chefs and cooks create new dishes or new ways to improve a dish • Problem solving- as a chef or a cook you need to be able to solve any problem that you come across, a chef might need to find new ingredients for a dish because he ran out of others or a cook might have problems with his cooking implements and need to get by with what he has available
College majors/ requirements • While it is not a requirement, most chefs today attend culinary school at the beginning of their careers to earn a degree. Prestigious culinary institutes such as the French Culinary Institute in New York City or one of the three locations of The Culinary Institute of America can put a chef in line for advancements. At the same time, a number of community colleges and universities provide outstanding culinary programs. Online cooking schools are growing but do not carry the same weight as hands-on instruction. • There is no required major but having culinary schooling on your resume helps a lot • The only difference between chefs is their skill not their degrees • Having studied cultural diversities that introduce you to new foods also helps
High school classes • Three classes at wando that would help with this career would be Culinary Arts 1, Culinary Arts 2, and a foreign language class such as Spanish or French • The two culinary arts classes would teach you the basics as well as some finer techniques • The Foreign Language classes would introduce you to some cultural diversity which helps with learning about new food and cooking techniques
