What is myclasses? • K-12 appropriate virtual learning environment (VLE) • Provides desktop pages for individual classes • Able to import learning objects from multiple repositories • e-Learning Folios (eLF) to allow educational context to placed around resources • Includes a content repository for storing and managing learning objects

Why should you consider myclasses? • Proven platform - already use myinternet software • Teachers familiarity with existing concepts – minimised training • Reduced Total Cost of Ownership • Low risk – infrastructure already in place • Increased demands for online learning – preparing for the future

What has myinternet learnt? • Less than 50% of classrooms are resourced with Internet connected computers. • Students spend between 1-2 hrs per week online. • Time and professional development are major issues for ordinary classroom teachers. There are three major barriers to the use of online content in classrooms:

What Do Teachers Do Online Now? • Search Google • Search results provide limited education focus. • Unaware of the benefits of metadata standards. • Evaluation of search results is done by individual teacher and doesn’t provide for collaboration or comments from other teachers. Teachers bring to eLearning sound educational frameworks and understandings which guide and inform their research.

  8. What Do Teachers Do Online Now? • Assemble relevant resources, student and teacher instructions and associated URLs into a word document • Inefficient use of Teacher Time and Resource • Manual process • Lack of shared understandings • Starting from scratch, not building on existing resources

  9. What Do Teachers Do Online Now? • 3.Deliver by printing and photocopying document for students • Promotes paper wastage / cost inefficient • No centralised storage system which enables sharing of resources • Students access is limited to individual paper copies

  10. What Will Teachers Do? • The teacher uses the federated search facility and associated metadata (i.e. Category, Audience, Source etc) to find resources most suited to the activity. 1. Search

Glossary Dublin Core: The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative is an open forum engaged in the development of interoperable online metadata standards that support a broad range of purposes and business models. EdNA metadata: The EdNA Metadata Standard is based on the internationally recognised Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES) and is consistent with  the Australian Government Locator Service (AGLS). Learning object: A learning object is a component of online content that can be identified, tracked, referenced, used and reused for a variety of learning purposes. IMS: The metadata standard produced by IMS Global Learning Consortium, Inc. It is a body which assists in the defining the technical specifications for interoperability of applications and services in distributed learning.

  26. Glossary Cont’d Property: A Property is an (application) area within myinternet that holds specific information for the members of the school community or allows access to tools and resources. Resource Search: The myinternet Resource Search is capable of searching any number of external databases and repositories, in addition to finding items and resources that have been created by a teacher. SCORM : Sharable Content Object Reference Model. A metadata standard produced by Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative. Web Services : A web service is a software system identified by a URI [RFC 2396], whose public interfaces and bindings are defined and described using XML.
