The Festival in my town: “the Virgin Mary of Carpinello” of Visciano POINTS: • When we celebrate it and why • What we do • What I did last year • What I’m going to do this year
I live in Visciano. Visciano is a small town in the hillsides about 10 kilometres from Nola. It’s about 15 minutes by car. We celebrate the Virgin Mary of Carpinello on the twenty-first of July. We celebrate this festival because a farmer found a painting of the Virgin Mary under a tree many years ago. Since then, we celebrate this festival. The festival lasts four days. It begins on Monday and finishes on Thursday. Where are you from? Do you celebrate any festivals in your town? Do you celebrate Christmas? What do you do on Christmas?
On the first day, there is a religious procession at 5:00 o’clock in the morning. People walk barefoot for 13 kilometres. Then there is a church mass. On the second day, there is a band of music that marches in the streets of the town. They collect money and bring it to the church. On the third day, there is a concert for young people of the town and there are a lot of rides, too. On the fourth day, there is a fireworks display.
Last year, I participated in the religious procession. I walked barefoot for about 5 kilometres. I was very, very tired. I had a big lunch and had a rest in the afternoon. But in the evening, I went for a walk and chatted with my friends in the town square. We went on the rides and we ate pizza and chips. What did you do your last holiday?
This year, I’m going to participate in the religious procession again. I’m going to invite my friends from school to my home and we’re going to have a big lunch together every day of the festival. This year my favourite singer is going to play at the concert of the festival. I can’t wait to see her. I’m going to the concert with my friends. What are you going to do this summer? Are you going to celebrate any festivity this summer?
