From the Guiding Principles of Beyond Crossroads • Technology. Technology should be integral to the teaching and learning of mathematics.
Assumptions and Background Standards for PedagogyTeaching with Technology • Mathematics faculty will model the use of appropriate technology in the teaching of mathematics so that students can benefit from the opportunities technology presents as a medium of instruction. Page 6 Beyond Crossroads
Brief History of Technology Books Mimeograph machines Colored chalk White boards Slide rules 0verhead transparencies Graphing calculators Viewscreens Computers Data projectors Word processors Presentation software Calculator emulators Spreadsheets Graphing tools Tablet PC’s.
Slide Rule • A device consisting of two logarithmically scaled rules mounted to slide along each other so that multiplication, division, and sometimes more complex computations may be reduced to the mechanical equivalent of addition and subtraction. • ---- American Heritage Dictionary
Technology Changes • Where we were is not where we are. • Where we are is not where we will be.
Where is Technology Now? • Since 1990, the graphing calculator has been a favored technology of choice to aid student learning. We still feel this is a great tool, but other tools are coming.
Where is Technology Now? • Excel is more widely accessible now that more students have their own computers and more schools have open labs.
Where is Technology Now? • We are probably not far off from a time when most students will have a hand-held device that serves as a computer, phone, radio, data storage unit, web-browser, camera, and calculator.
