This means that mountains are much higher than sea level and the land surrounding them. Generally, mountains occur as part of a mountain range, or group of mountains that are about the same shape, structure, and age. A mountain's base will cover at least a few square kilometers. Mountains rise to a point called a peak. The sides of a mountain can be very steep. An example of a mountain is Mount Whitney. Mount Whitney belongs to the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It is the highest mountain in the continental US with an elevation of 14,505 ft (4,421 m).
