    2.

    5. Aims: 1. To add an alternative rehabilitation treatment program for the chronic schizophrenic in-patients by using APMT. 2. To demonstrate the feasibility of providing sustainable APMT for chronic schizophrenic in-patients. 3. To explore its effects on mental health of the patients.

    6. 1. APMT sessions took place once a week for teaching by musical teacher and once a day for staff nurses/themselves between 1-Jan2008-31 March 2008. 2. All patients had been diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia. They stayed in the hospital for long time, at least more than three months. 3. We used One-to-Five technique to teach the nine patients. 4. They had never learned how to play music before. Learning to play piano using this special technique is very short. After ten minutes of instruction and coaching, the patients they could have learned their own new songs. 5. Then practiced to be more skillful playing their songs each day by themselves and staff nurse for ten minutes each day.

    7. 6. Next week the patients met with music teachers to learn other new songs. It made a cycle of ten minutes learning on the first of each week and ten minutes practicing on the second to the seventh day of the week. 7. The cycle repeated every week for three months. The One-to-Five technique translates the universal music notes to just number 1 to 5 to be used by each finger (left and right hands). 8. We explored the effects on the mental health of the patients by using four instruments. Happiness by Thai happiness indicators THI-15, Stress screening test by DMH’s SPST-20. Rehabilitation outcomes measurement by DMH’s REHAB-6. Psychiatric symptoms by BPRS. Satisfactions with care were also conducted after 3 months.

    11. The patients who’d got many problem catatonia, EPS, handicapped of have four fingers, and physical problem as cataract, tried to learn piano with musical teacher.

    17. Active Piano Music Therapy (APMT) together with “One to Five teaching technique” is effective form of rehabilitation treatment program for chronic schizophrenic in-patient. It improves the quality of life of the patient. It is fast. It is not expensive. It is fun. It makes every people involved happier.
