Drugs A Never Ending Social Problem By, Mikail Robinson
Reflections Page • I decided to do my PowerPoint on drug abuse. I know that it is a growing problem. At only 21 years old I have already had 4 friends die from a drug overdose. That is why I chose this as my topic although it is a sensitive subject I feel the strongest about it. • I grew up in Springville UT, where the majority of my friends from school are now heroine addicts. I currently do not know any statistics about drug abuse but I know that it is a big problem in the world. • I am thrilled to learn more so maybe one day with the knowledge I encounter I will be able to help someone suffering of this disease.
Drug Users • In 2010 an estimated 22.6 million Americans 12 or older had used an illicit drug. That is 8.9% of the population! • More than half of the drug users start with marijuana • Most people start using illicit drugs when they are teenagers • Marijuana is the biggest drug used 61.8% of users smoke marijuana • Pain Medication is 2nd biggest at 17.3% • (http://www.drugabuse.gov/related-topics/trends-statistics)

Marijuana • Marijuana is one of the most controversial drugs there are more users than any other drug and many people feel that it shouldn’t be illegal. • Recently states such as Washington and Colorado legalized marijuana • 12.5% of 8th graders have admitted to abusing marijuana • 18.8% of 10th graders admitted to it • And 36.4% of seniors in high school admitted to abusing it. • There has never been a reported drug abuse involving marijuana • (http://www.interventionsupport.com/drug-addiction-statistics/)
Opioids http://opioids.com/oxycodone/oxycontin.htm • The most commonly used Opioids are; heroin, opium, morphine, hydromorphone, hydrocodone and oxycodone. Below is a chart of what percent of opioid users use which opioid.
Addiction • Getting addicted to an opioid is highly likely if you abuse the drug. • Currently one million people in the United states are addicted to Heroin. • When you become addicted to heroin it is nearly impossible to fully recover and become clean from the drug • Only about 5% of full on addicts will completely recover from their addiction. • Most of them will end up dying from the drug. • A study was shown to show what percent of heroin users still used after some type of treatment. The graph with results is on next slide. • http://www.northlandaddictiontreatmentrehabcenter.com/resources/opioid-dependence

Conclusion • Drug abuse is a scary thing, and from what I have learned there is a huge amount of people that are current users. • Drug abuse is a huge social issue it passes around terrible diseases like HIV and also takes many lives. • High school students are likely to try out some type of drugs in their lifetime. • Us as parents need to talk to our children about the risks of illicit drugs that is the one way we can try to prevent this terrible issue.
