In The Footsteps Of The Master:The Life and Times of Jesus Christ Jesus with Mary and Martha August 21, 2011 www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Background • We’ve been studying several vignettes that discuss hospitality and what it means to be a neighbor • Sending out of the Twelve • Sending out of the Seventy • The Good Samaritan • Each of these has put the spotlight on the demands for meeting the needs of others, and for depending on others for our own need www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Introduction • This week’s lesson brings us an additional story that speaks to the issue of hospitality • Mary and Martha www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Mary & Martha • Luke 10:38-40 • 38As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • We’ve all heard this story a thousand times • Martha is a busy bee, while Mary sits at Jesus’ feet • Why would Martha be so obsessed with her duties? • Why would Mary be at the feet of Jesus? • How might Mary’s behavior be counter to the culture of the day • Why would Martha be upset with Mary? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • Note that Jesus has assumed a status somewhat akin to the host • Mary went straight to Him • Others must have done the same • Martha looks to Him for marching orders (for Mary) www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Jesus’ Response • Luke 10:41-42 • 41“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • Martha is concerned about extending hospitality to her guest • A very important thing in this culture • However, Mary has placed her focus on Jesus • Definitely the MOST important thing • Martha’s protests are in a way self-incriminating • Hospitality is fleeting, but a relationship with Jesus is eternal www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
In Conclusion • Hospitality and neighborly-ness are important • But Jesus is more important still www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Next Week • The Blasphemy of the Pharisees • Luke 11:14-54 Questions? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
