Harper Lee wrote and published one book • Her book, To Kill a Mockingbird, was written in 1959. • The book was published in 1960, and immediately became a hit. • The book went onto win a Pulitzer Prize in 1961.
Themes in the book . . . • The book is a “coming-of-age” story about the book’s protagonist, “Scout” Finch. • The book also gives an accurate portrayal of the racial prejudices in the South.
The book To Kill a Mockingbird parallels part of Harper Lee’s life • The character of “Dill” is said to be patterned after Lee’s childhood friend, famous author Truman Capote. • Lee’s father was a state senator and attorney, similar to the father of the protagonist in the book. • Similar to “Scout”, Lee was a tomboy growing up.
