  2. Harper Lee . . . • Born in Monroeville, Alabama in April 1926. • Descendent of Robert E. Lee, famous Civil War Confederate general. • The youngest of four children, Lee grew up as a “tomboy” and loved to be outdoors.

  3. Harper Lee wrote and published one book • Her book, To Kill a Mockingbird, was written in 1959. • The book was published in 1960, and immediately became a hit. • The book went onto win a Pulitzer Prize in 1961.

  4. Themes in the book . . . • The book is a “coming-of-age” story about the book’s protagonist, “Scout” Finch. • The book also gives an accurate portrayal of the racial prejudices in the South.

  5. The book To Kill a Mockingbird parallels part of Harper Lee’s life • The character of “Dill” is said to be patterned after Lee’s childhood friend, famous author Truman Capote. • Lee’s father was a state senator and attorney, similar to the father of the protagonist in the book. • Similar to “Scout”, Lee was a tomboy growing up.

  6. Lee is still alive today . . . • Her book To Kill a Mockingbird is a “one-hit wonder”. Lee wrote another book but never submitted it for publication. • Over 30 million copies of the book have been sold throughout the world today. It has been translated into over 40 languages.

  7. What is Lee doing now? • Lee has homes in both New York and in Alabama, and avoids having anything to do with her famous book!
