Don Norman http://www.jnd.org/NNg-Photographs/NNg-photographs.html
Outline • POETS • Nominations • Examples of everyday design • Affordances • Values • Application of these principles to interface design • Homework
Action cycle examples • Submitted by Gloria • gulf-data-form(ANQI ZHANG GLORIA AZ610).docx
Affordance • ‘Interfaces’ should be intuitive • Good designs afford their use
Affordances are • Ill-defined • Why is the chair the favourite example? • Culturally dependent • Evolutionary • Don Norman on affordance (1:52)
Good affordance http://www.dovetailcarpentry.co.uk/images/prime-images/push-bar-door-1.jpg
Good – and bad - affordance Sophia
Value in design • Every design embodies the designers’ values • What are they? • Possibly conflicting
Example values • Accessibility • Aesthetics • Ease-of-use • Ecology • Money-making • Safety • Others?
Conflicting values • Don Norman on the Macintosh on-switch • http://www.jnd.org/dn.mss/designing_future.html
What would you do with this object? • http://www.freefoto.com/images/13/49/13_49_59---Cold-Water-Tap_web.jpg
More taps The affordance of the water faucet is to open it vertically, but in fact it just can be rotated horizontally.
Mixer taps? • Why does a designer design a ‘very hot water’ and a ‘cold water’, not a ‘warm water’ and a ‘cold water’. The ‘hot water’ faucet is useless because it is ’very hot’.
Affordances evolve? • What would you do with this object?
Hand dryers • What do you know about someone who wants to dry their hands? • Their hands are wet
Charger in Zurich airport (Teng Ma) • Good: • Industrial design: battery • Clear metaphor: drawer with lock • Friendly UI
Charger in Zurich airport (Teng Ma) • Clear UI design • Conceptual model • Manual • Accessible
Drinks machine at HCI • Printed instruction • Animated display • Hand-written instructions blu-tacked on • …and still a group of HCI experts could not use it
Coffee machine in Zurich airport • (Teng Ma) • Good: • Sugar volume control • Good mapping between execution and interface feedback
Vending machine in Zurich airport • Bad: • Cluttered UI design • Messy use flow • up and down when using • Poor accessibility • too high
Feng Gao • In my opinion, although the competition on hardware of computer is still exist. However, as a product, it needs more to look like a work of art. Not only can satisfy the demands of work, also can let people in a good mood when use it.
Heating machine timer • BAD: • Learnability: • Too complex to learn • Affordance: • How and where to rotate? • Rotating to set timer? • Need I know what time it is now?
London tube http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/777/227964.JPG
York station • Changed – but I am still not happy
www.thetrainline.com • GOOD: • Using the yellow highlight to mark the cheapest one and green highlight to show the ticket time and type. • On the right side, there is a dialog to help user precede a quick buy
Josh Vedder • They both display a good clear Call To Action. I'm afraid I didn't get to find out how they worked as one of the Virgin employees came and spoke to me and I didn't really fancy getting into a full conversation
