Battle Plan • A (brief) history of software piracy – Don • Oldschool FTP examples – Don • Terms & General Info – Chris & Don • Rapidshare & file hosting services – Don • Searching Tips – Don • BitTorrent – Chris & Don • Ripping streaming video – Don • IRC & Scripting – Chris • Usenet - Chris • Questions / Mailing list / Pirate locker – Chris & Don
A (brief) history of software piracy • Warez – file sharing for you, not for profit. • The Scene started during the BBS days, with boards that served up only warez or had “elite” file sections. • During the BBS days, copy parties and mail trading was popular as well. • There has always been competition between groups for 0-day releases. • And a strict hierarchy... • FTP and IRC has given way to BitTorrent and direct download, but these older methods still exist.
Oldschool FTP examples(via Usenet on Wikipedia) • 208.130.11.215 /incoming • (Generic unsecured FTP server, with anonymous read and write access to everything.) • 141.223.1.1 /pub/X11/R6contrib/incoming/pixmap.me/netscape2.zip/DiM.zip/ • (Discovery of poor security in a deeply pathed FTP location. The warez site uses directories named so as to look like unimportant files.) • 128.118.27.44 / l&p=warez • (Hacked server running hacker-controlled FTP service, with non-anonymous access. Login name: warez, password: warez) 204.181.57.2 port 999 l/p warez • (Hacked server running hacker-controlled FTP service, on a non-standard FTP port and non-anonymous login)
Terms & General Info • FILE_ID.DIZ / .NFO files, .sfv, par2, rar • Cracks • Serials • Keygens • ISO's • Rips • Movies: cam, telesync, workprint, screeners, telecine/R5, rips • Appz / Games
Rapidshare and file hosting services • Rapidshare, Megaupload, Shareminer etc. • Best if used with http://www.rlslog.net/ or if you know what you're looking for, or nfohump.com • Lots of scene releases, so cross check with BitTorrent sites • Most are free and for pay • Free ones limit the amount of files in a given time, but you can get around that
Searching Tips • Even today, most games, movies, and albums are released by groups in the scene. • Again, it's best to search for scene releases, and append words like: torrent, rapidshare, megaupload • Use torrent sites to look at file lists – then search for one of those files • Use quotation marks to make sure your complex searches go correctly • Learn to avoid bullshit and/or misleading sites – this takes time, but is important for a few reasons!
BitTorrent • Very popular way of downloading pirated software and movies • Sites like Demonoid and The Pirate Bay have been around for years • Get a good client (like Vuze) that has a Safe Peer plugin or something similar • Remember to enable port-forwarding on your router for better speeds
Ripping Streaming Video • For Firefox, DownloadHelper is a great tool • Tools like it exist for all browsers • It rips most streaming video online, from sites like YouTube and Vimeo • If you get the file in a format you can't covert, there is always: http://media-convert.com/ • This is useful for presentations and other times you need video from the web but may not have net access
IRC & Scripting • http://xdccing.com/ • mIRC, colloquy
Usenet • Giganews, SSL, unlimited • http://www.peerblock.com/docs/faq#p2p_disclaimer • http://www.binsearch.info/ • Nforce.nl, vcdquality and tv.com • Little Snitch • Unison, NZBDrop and VLCMediaPlayer
MSJ • iSerial Reader • SerialBox
Questions / Mailing list /Pirate locker • Any questions? • Mailing list: • http://groups.google.com/group/itp-warez • Private, so sign up now and we'll add you • Pirate locker: still in the planning stages… • Security through transparency ;)
