  2. Mission • Chapin Living Waters exists to help poor people in third world countries grow vegetable when there is insufficient rain. We offer simple, sustainable technologies for subsistence farming, bringing hope to the poorest people and the opportunity to solve their food shortage.

  3. Who we Help Help for All People. Chapin Living Waters was founded as a means toexpress Christian love to needy people in third world nations throughsmall-scale drip irrigation technology. While much of our effort isdirected toward missionaries working among these suffering peoples,Chapin Living Waters stands ready to assist any group, regardless ofrace, color or creed. With l. l  million people going to bed hungrytonight, we are dedicated to working in partnership with as manyorganizations as possible.

  4. Strategy • Our work involves publishing training materials, conducting workshops and seminars in drip irrigation and basic agricultural methods for subsistence farming and assisting in the distribution of “Bucket Kits”. The “Bucket Kit”, consisting of 100 feet of drip hose, fittings and connecting tubing, is ideal for poor families in communities where running water and pumps are not available. The family connects the kit to a 5-galllon bucket elevated at least 1 meter above the ground, and fills the bucket with water twice daily. This simple, inexpensive, gravity fed system will provide enough moisture for a vegetable garden large enough to feed a small family during periods when there is absolutely no rainfall.

  9. Billions Have Been Spent For Third World Relief Food! …… Then the Next Drought Creates the Need all Over Again

  10. Not only does the food have to be purchased, but it has to be distributed to the other side of the world.

  12. Can Drip Irrigation be used to help poor people of the third world to grow their own vegetables ?

  13. In 1974 Catholic Relief of Senegal asked for help to grow vegetables during their dry season.

  14. A 50 Gallon Drum was Mounted 6 Feet Above the Soil and Drip Lines were Connected for Each Row

  16. This Worked Very Well ! However … It is far too expensive for a Family with little or no income.

  17. Later in the 1970’s a simple and inexpensive Bucket Kit was developed. It was found that a 5 gallon bucket one meter above the soil would provide enough pressure to Irrigate 2 Rows 50 feet long !

  18. The same Bucket Kit can Also be Used For : 4 rows 25 feet long or 6 rows 16.5 feet long

  19. When it is first installed, the bucket should be filled 2 or 3 Times. This makes a wet spot at each outlet.

  20. Then, a plant is transplanted in each wet spot, so that every drop of water goes directly to a plant.

  21. Often the water used for Bucket Kits is rather dirty. To overcome this, a 3 stage filtering system is used.

  22. 1st Stage: A Heavy Cloth is Tied to the Top of the Bucket

  23. 2nd Stage: A Screen Filter at the bottom of the bucket 3rd Stage: An Internal Filter extending the full length of the Drip Lines.

  24. The Drip Lines should be installed with the outlets up. ~ This allows any Foreign particles to fall to the bottom of the tape where it can be flushed out the end.

  26. Two Week Seminars and Two Day Workshops to Train Trainers have been held in many countries, with mornings in classroom settings and afternoons with hands-on field work.

  30. Usually, filling the 5 gallon bucket once in the morning and once in the afternoon is sufficient. However, when the growth is large and there is a very hot dry wind, it might need a 3rd filling.

  31. Larger Field

  32. Schools, orphanages, and community gardens have requested a larger Kit which could drip irrigate : 10 rows, each 10 meters long

  33. This Kit is known as the : SUPER BUCKET KIT It uses a 35 gallon plastic garbage container mounted one meter above the soil, and is filled once daily.

  34. Small farms, with pressurized water, can use a 1/4 ACRE KIT to drip irrigate 2,000 feet of rows ( 20 rows 100 feet long)

  36. Mr. Napoleon Dzombe

  37. Mr. Dzombe donated the Blessings Hospital and has distributed many truckloads of hospital supplies and relief foods for people of Malawi.

  38. His organization in Malawi has used 10,000 Bucket Kits. In 2004 he built a food plant.

  39. Their goal was to provide a nutritious VitaMeal to 25,000 orphans daily. By Feb. 2006 they were up to feeding 86,000 orphans daily!

  40. The trucks leave the plant for different locations to distribute to about 3,000 orphans daily

  41. Each orphan has a card showing the year’s months. When they receive 30 day’s food, the month is checked off.
